oh yeah saw that link from STF, apparently they cost about 60k AUD to rebuild STOCK!

They are just glorious engines. They are the ULTIMATE flat four engine.

Porsche first put the twin overhead cam flat four in the 550 Spyder in 1954 in 1.6-litre form. Later, 356 coupes with the twin-cam engine were called Carreras. The last 1.6-litre engines got up to 165 hp, and in 1961 they went to 2-litres. The 356 coupe version was the Carrera 2, and the maximum development was the race-tuned version in the Porsche 904 race car of 1963-65, which produced over 190 hp. After that, Porsche moved onto 6, 8 and 12-cylinder engines.

Thanks for the link Phil......great stuff.
There's is guy in the states that is casting cases and forging cranks etc to allow the use of the 911 engine components in a 4 cylinder quad cam engine.

i can ask...crazy old German fellow..in the USA 2 to 3 times a year buying cars :) he had 3 or 4 356 when I was last at his house :) +930 +e type you get the idea..oh to be old with to much $$$$
