Does anyone know of any compnaies that can install air con into a kombi. we have talked to a few places around Brisbane but they say it may be possible but the crank shaft pulley is the biggest problem or lack of one. They quote anywhere from $2000 -10 000. I have heard there is someone in Coffs harbour that has done a few . any info would be great
factory / dealer fitted air con compressor was driven by a pulley between the fan shroud and the block i believe.
my air-cooled caravelle has a pulley behind the fan on the back of the motor for the air but alas no belt on it
my mech graham (midcoast volkswerks) has done a few but they are factory ones
his number is-(02)66528255 he fabricates the pulley to fit behind the flywheel & the
bracket to mount the motor but give him a ring he could do non vw air cons.
mines been in nearly a year & no problems with a cool 11 degrees blowing through the van
motor & fanbelt above the heater box
factory vw air con

This may not be what you want, but it bears saying anyway. If you went to a Subaru, they come with the compressor on the motor. Custom offroad do an
EJ22 kit from $6500, and then you just need a hotrod style dashmount unit (mine was about $300) and a condensor and you are away. Not only that, but
the subaru is actually designed to power air con. Air con on the air cooled motor is gonna suck more power and make fuel economy even worse.
However, if you want to stay aircooled, just ignored everything I've just said.
Do you have any of the parts?
Or are you looking at a complete supply and fit?
Original VW is rare and all of the parts will be 30 plus years old
New stuff is not designed specifically for VW so you will have to pay for someone to manufactur/ fabricate components to make it adapt to the
aircooled motor.
i would have to disagree pete, mine is vw factory surely they new what they were doing
& as my mech & natrad have expressed its surprisingly more economical & less power sucking
than you would think, the motor is 1 & a halve horsepower, the cool air comes down from
the roof compared to being pushed up as in any other car, the temp was down to 11 degrees after two drives around a small block.
as the natrad installer said he was surprised & impressed with how good it works even if it is
a 30 year old system, maybe they were built to last like there vehicles
We have no parts what so ever but looking at a complete kit. The one from the states looks good just concerned that if we have any problems with it we are so far away to get it fixed under warrenty. I will call Grahame on Monday and see what he has to say. If all else fails i may just have to go to Coffs for a holiday and get air con fitted while i am there. Will also check out any Kombis with air con at Dubs by the Pub
