outside mirrors legality.
53racer - February 25th, 2006 at 09:23 PM

Ok, i have done a search, and found i'm not the only one that got a bug without external mirrors.
now, how legal is it to drive this thing around, the previous owner obviously never had probs....
but new laws and blah blah, so whats the go.
seat belts are required... so are mirrors?

btw, i have no intentions of keeping the car without them, id be scared to not have them, already tried driving it without em...:o

I think seat belts legislation came in 1970 and in WA cars built prior to that date do not have to have seat belts.(I think)
Not sure what date one interior and one external mirror came in

I think it has to have one inside and one outside mirror(drivers side) to be legally roadworthy.Commercial vehicles have to have both left and right mirrors.(utes, vans trucks etc)
Cars manafactured before compliance plates were fitted can get away with none as long as none were fitted and have been removed. There is a "grey" area involving these cars.As mentioned you can still have a car with no seatbelts fitted.A regulation has been introduced in NSW stating that if these cars ever have to establish a registration again they have to meet all legal standards. So as long as these old cars remain registed they can stay seatbelt and mirror free. How ever if the rego lapses, then these will have to fitted before a blue slip will be issued.

hmm, makes sense to me, this bug following its history has never been out of rego, merely a liscence plate change, so yeah, they added seat belts, not greatly well, but no mirror.
its a bugger trying to get those hinge pins out being in there since 1964

you could go those uber kool 'peep' ones that hang from the top of ya door... ClassicVeeDub have em for $40 i think..

yeah, i buy a fair bit of him, but im trying to keep the car somewhat original, simply bought the hinge ones.

if your car did not come with mirrors or seat beats etc. From new.
thats how it should be, not a rego issue.

Ah this is a great help! I’m going for my P's soon and my '61 bug only has a right hand side mirror. The hinge pins aren't budging to put new mirrors on, so I thought id have to put off the test for ages!

Thanks :tu:

i think for your driving test you have to have a car with retractable seat belts... so no bug for test. i could be wrong

53racer - February 26th, 2006 at 07:58 PM

my 1966 chrysler valiant has only one outside mirros with aftermarket retractable seatbelts, drove that for my driving test. also passed with that car :P
be funny the test guy saying, check ure mirrors when you aint got none
