145s on 5.5 rims - Is it safe ?
shaginwagin - March 7th, 2006 at 10:37 AM

I'm currently running 4.5" rims on my late square and thinking of replacing my wheels with a 5.5" rim.

I currently have 145 tyres on the fronts and assumed these tyres are too small to fit on 5.5 rims but see that some people are indeed running 145s on 5.5 rims.

Do 145s fit OK on 5.5 rims, or is it unsafe as this car is my daily driver

Cheers :thumb

145'S are still wider than the 5.5" rim. They should run fine but I would check with your local tyre specialist. 5" rims definately would sit better but it should not be too bad. The bonus will be that you will not be running a super low profile thus you will have some side wall for movement.

Cheers

Hi,

I have 135s on 5.5in wheels never had any problems , not legal but i gottem on there.

Make sure you put inner tubes in so you dont roll the tyre off the rim.

I'd say it depends on the profile of the tyre in regards to whether it'll fit well or not..

I am going to be the fuddy duddy and say........ well nothing

If it is a regular daily driver, that see serious traffic useage, and a lot of turns ....... well, i dont think you would find a tyre guy that says "now there is a good idea"

*steps down from soap box*

That said - there are some sensible people that have done whet you are suggesting

just think about what your need are

Legality aside, I ran 145 michelins on 5.5in flat4 brm replicas for a long time without a problem.

You can get some really good low profile 165s (safer and legal) that will give you more clearance for around the $130 mark. I've got 165x45s. Maybe a bit excessive but they handle nicely.

Thanks for all the input guys.

Sounds like it's definately feasible to put my 145's on the 5.5s but am interested to hear that you can get low profile 165s x 15s. What brand are they ?

Cheers

Nah continentals are way too $$$

Mine are federals and there are a few others out there. Email Ben at Unique Tyres, he helped me heaps!
