Tonight when I was driving my Type 3, someone following me commented that the car was giving off a strong fuel smell. There is no apparent leak either from the engine area or the fuel tank. Where do you suggest that I start to isolate the problem? I have been thinking that there may be fuel spill when the tank is full and I go around a corner. Perhaps the fuel cap or the rubber hoses into the tank have a leak. Any ideas? Could flooding of the carbies cause the problem whe I am driving? Greg

Maybe fuel cap or overflow pipe.

Dunno bout Type 3's but on a L bug it can be on of the rubber hoses have freyed / split

If it is coming from the rear it could be a stuck float

Have a good sniff near the back seat/tunnel in case the fuel line inside has sprung a leak.Check under the center of the car for fuel leaks.Also check under the front where the fuel line goes inside the tunnel (under the tank).Good luck.Be safe!!

Its probably your fuel tank overflow pipe.. my car does the exact same thing, when its over about 1/2 full, and you go around a left hand bend, it smells of fuel. I'm STILL waiting on my new one from WCM! :cussing

look around with a match you can see better. "why doesnt anyone let me fix their car"?

I think theres a small hose (about size of vaccuum line) that runs from the fuel filler neck area in the bonnet, over to the right hand side, and down out under the floorpan. If its going out onto the road while driving, that could be why you dont see it.

Problem fixed this weekend. I noticed that I had fuel really dripping out of the rubber fuel line that goes from the fuel line under the floor arch to the fuel filter. I replaced the rubber and problem fixed. I actually drove the fasty from Canberra to Sydney and back today - on a very hot day - and the care went like a dream.

Many cars passed me on the Hume Highway but I did manage to pass a 1950's truck, a learner driver and an old bus.. Hey not bad I reckon. Greg

hehe, yah they go better then expected in the heat dont they. i did 900km on a 38deg day at the start of the year, never seemed to get hot or flustered, didnt even realise how hot the day was until i got home (was driving in convoy with my father, his magna registered up to 43deg outside!)
