Interior fitout
beach26 - March 10th, 2006 at 11:34 AM

I am currently redoing the interior of my 78 Pop top. I wish to convert to a full width bed from the current 3/4. Does anyone have any good layouts that use this method. need to intergrate stove fridge and sink...as well as as much storage as psooible.

one method is behind driver, stove ontop of fridge, sink right next to it. i prefer a swingout behind the passenger with the stove ans storage below, leaving the frodge in the opposite corner with the sink ontop. if you want lots of storage you can always block the walkthrough, or if you have a panelvan make a box out of the spare wheel well between the seats and retain the walkthrough. if you have a std walkthrough you can box up the area between the seat bases and simply have a solid lid on it that you can step on and swivel yourself from the front seats to the back (close to what i have done) a shelf over the back of the bed (where the poptop stops) is also surprisingly useful)

Thanks...Im interested in the swingout Idea. Do you have a phot of what that would look like or a description of how it works

I have made a shelf that is level with the folded out bed/seat, which I then padded. It has flip top lids, so storage is now under the shelf. this has effectively given me a double bed+.. !

I removed my fridge, (just use an esky, easier and more portable at the campsite), stove and small gas bottle is in an old milk crate.... I should go and take some piccies, bit easier to explain..

back soon with some pics..

Some piccies.,...

When we camp, we take a rolled up piece of foam about 1.5 inches thick, which then unrolls ontop and makes for a really comfy bed...zzzzzzzzzz!!
the crate comes out and stove is setup ontop of it.. (marvelous invention the ole milk crate...)

cheap plastic draws from some $2.00 shop... couple of jockie straps to hold it all down... :)

dont have any good pics, but basically the unit pivots on the corner closest to the cars B-Pillarswinging the whole unit to hang out of the doorway making more space inside (with the door open) and less heat problems by cooking virtually outside, if you look up Trakka's website or visit one of their showrooms, they still use this method on most of their VW campers

Heres a custom interior i was going to build, i have only put the back full width seat/bed in so far, not really after a sink anymore so may just end up with 2 little storage boxes behind each seat... Here are the images
