Sydney to Perth in a Beetle
Peter Leonard - March 16th, 2006 at 08:36 PM

As if you would.

I'm doing it. I figure if i can do Darwin and back in a basic Pobjoy 1916, then the 4000 ks to Perth should be even MORE fun in a considerably meaner race-spec, double ignitioned, heavily laden 1916.

Woohoo! Anyone ever tried this before? Granted I'm cheating by doing it in style, but has anyone from on here done it in a Beetle?
And no... I don't mean on the back seat.

Any constructive comments will be stricken from the record!
I look forward to meeting the West Coast Chapter when i get there:bounce

I'm leaving (hopefully) Saturday morning, so forgive me if i ignore your noisome replies for the next week or so.

Yeeeehaw!:thumb

Sure thing. While I'm offline I'll get news back here some way or another. You're obviously just as silly as me :D

Should be no problems-Kombis do it all the time.

Road is pretty good -just watch out for the big rigs on Nullabor. Thursday is quietest for them.

I went from Canberra via Sydney along Highway 1 to Perth in a buggy in 1997. Compared to me you will be doing it in style.

I just recently did about a 3500km round trip (the long way thru the snowies) from Sydney to Melbourne and back ....took about two weeks......including about 1300kms in one day, from Melb to Hepburn Springs back to Melb then to Berowra in Sydney.... in a stock 1600sp.... easy!
so you probably gotta about 2-4times more HP .... be like ducking up the shop for a carton of milk I reckon!

handycam - March 17th, 2006 at 05:26 AM

freind of ours use 2 do it in the 60's in a 1200beetle and did it once a month from sydney

56astro - March 17th, 2006 at 07:29 AM

Have ya got a long-range fuel tank, or a jerry can??

The stock fuel tank will make the trip seem as though you spent half your time at service stations.

VWFREAK - March 17th, 2006 at 08:03 AM

Nice one. That one hell of a long trip, driven it 4 times so far.

Craig Torrens - March 17th, 2006 at 08:53 AM

Ahhh, the sound of twin 44's and the hiss of the NOS bottle...........................music to your ears !

64vwmark - March 17th, 2006 at 10:52 PM

Let us know when you get into Perth. Maybe us WA dubbers can arrange to meet up with you somewhere to say hello.

shaihulud - March 17th, 2006 at 11:56 PM

I second that Mark Mark. Keep me in the loop.

Peter Leonard - March 18th, 2006 at 08:18 AM

Would love to meet up with some VW people, and I was hoping to go to the cruise that's on next weekend.... assuming it's still on... can't find the thread, but i remember something about the 26th of March... maybe?

I'll need to reestablish my dealer/parts/vw-related fix base over there, so any tips and help would be great :D

and craig.... the NOS is kinda sorta really really illegal in WA, so no hissing ;)

64vwmark - March 19th, 2006 at 12:25 AM

Yes the cruise is still on. It will be great to see you there. 26th of March is right. We are going to meet at the northern carpark at Hillarys Marina (near the boat ramps) at about 4:30pm.

There are a number of good VW shops over here so you will have no problems.

Cool!!

Found an internet cafe just in time then :D

Trip was funner than i thought, but I only saw one other VW travelling the same way (and it was a Kombi with backpackers). Got some great looks from people as I shot by at warp speed. Unfortunately my fuel tank was considerably shorter range than almost everyone else's so I'd end up passing the same people a few times.

Got a Massive double thumbs up from a roadworker as i closed in on Perth.... wasn't sure if it was because i'd survived the shitty roadworks, or the fact that I'd driven a beetle all the way from NSW. I've cleaned the bugs off (mostly) but there are a few chips and dings from the trip that weren't there to start with. hopefully see a few of you at hillary's later on :D

:beer:beer

EEP! running out of internet time!
