Great to see VWs on the dirt. There was one run here in WA at Claremont Speedway in late 60's. It was owned by Bob Biltoft and built by Don Milne.
It ran an inboard Type 3 and was very quick. Only problem a few woke up that if they hit it in the back it knocked it out of gear.
bump...
are you sure its 1600
Dave Dave he's our man... If he can't do it... what hope in the world do any of the other shitboxes have of even starting??
I saw Herbie outside the speedway on the back of a Premier just before Christmas...wherupon I proceded to mope about the fact I was aboput to leave
for the SES christmas party instead ofbeing at the speedway for all that wholesome goodness that is a racing bug.
So who owns Herbie anyway?

BTW, 93rwhp is awesome for a 1640. What sort of bottom end does the engine have?
Pete - I understand your comment, but I have just edited your post as I have with Wayne's - we are determined to keep the forum a positive place.
For anyone reading this, please take up your personal issues via email/U2U/better yet phone them, the forum has sufferred enough from negativity and

Horace is on the trailer and ready to go to Nowra speedway tonight !! Check out the 12 degrees negative camber on the right rear wheel . We modified and braced the rear trailing arm during the week in effort to get Horace to handle better . Will let you know how he goes !!
first pic shows HORACE out on the track doing wheel-packing with the other cars . This is mandetory as the track has been prepared and watered for the nights racing . The wheel-packing process is to move all cars around the track at a slow pace so that the water is pushed into the surface of the clay , so that it doesn't break up during the nights racing and leave large holes in the track .
this pic shows just how much clay gets stuck under the guards , on the wheels and on the panels after wheel-packing

race 1 . Horace starts from position 7 and has a very clean race , finishing in position 5 .
more pics from race 1 .
race 2 . Horace started from position 5 and finished in position 5 . The rear suspension modifications appear to be working well as the bug is handling extremely well and sitting very flat through the corners .
race 3 . HORACE FELL OVER !!!
driver Dave started out of position 7 . After feeling much more confident with the handling of the bug in the previous race , Dave started the drive
deeper into the corners on full throttle and it was the most impressive that I have personally seen the bug run . On one paticular corner I saw him
pass under 2 datsuns to gain those 2 positions .
He was running in position 5 and gaining ground when another car had an incident on the track and the amber lights came on to slow the drivers down .
Dave came out of turn 2 ( where we were standing ) on full throttle and hadn't seen the amber lights . I the few seconds it took him to speed along
the back straight , see the amber lights on , look up to see a very slow moving datsun in front of him , Dave jumped on the brakes in a panic !!
Horace has a 4 wheel braking system with a brake tap fitted to the right front brake pipe , so when we race we turn the brake tap off and the brakes
dont work on the right front wheel . This enables us to get the bug to slide sideways into the corners by stabbing the brake pedal with your left foot
whilst still on full throttle , when entering a corner .
Dave got the full effect of the 3 wheel braking system as Horace dived to the left of the slow moving datsun (fortunately missing it ) and proceeded
into a very spectacular double roll-over and landing back onto his wheels .
dave is OK , but Horace is very bent as the series of following pics show .
Looks like Daves got some overtime to do if he wants to get horace to the next meeting in 2 weeks time , on April 15 .

post rollover pics this morning . Our front suspension still looks fine , but will need a thorough check over and our LED skull with red flashing eyes is still OK . Thanks to George at Classic VW for the donation of the LED skull .
post rollover pics . The last 2 pics show the damaged engine tinware and a dented rocker cover where the body contacted the engine . Also Horace still
looks good from the right angle and from a distance .
Have a great day !!
We went for a look last night, there was a big field of 1600's, looked like the track didn't have as much traction as other time's, but after
seeing Dave roll over Iam not so sure,
It was a big roll over too, I heard the noise and looked to see the car upside down in the air and go over again. Good to hear Dave is OK.
after stripping Horace to assess damage the repairs commence . My father Allan comes to the rescue once again and shows his great talents with
bodywork by repairing the severely damaged left front skirt ( which was rolled over the top of the top strut mount ) and repairing the damage to the
left rear quarter panel .
Three of the fibreglass guards are repaired . Bonnet repaired just enough to make it fit the car again . Bonnet pegs straightened and 1 welded back on
. Roof cut from another superbug , then all of the double panels removed , then fitted and welded into position on Horace . Both left CV joints
replaced . Left rear trailing arm straightened to rectify excessive negative camber . Right rear trailing arm repaired . Right rear shock absorber
replaced . Right front brake caliper replaced . Painted and new stickers applied , READY TO RACE .
All of this and the bug was not touched during work hours !!
the roof cut off Horace
the new roof welded back on and then masked-up to be painted
more pics of Horace today , all repaired and ready to go racing again tonight at Nowra Speedway .
