Tyres on EMPI 5's on early Type 3
matara - March 28th, 2006 at 08:58 AM

All you Type 3'ers out there with EMPI 5 spokes on your cars, can you tell me what size tyres you run on the front/rear.

I have a 65 1500S with standard drums that I want to put EMPI's on.

I've heard that using bigger than 185/65 or 55 tyres on a Type 3 will cause rubbing.

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve ,

I have 135 and 165s on my notch, my car is a 62. Cars up to 63 have thinner drums than 64 on cars . To fit larger size tyres or rims to the rear you will have to perform an axle change using axles and axle tubes from an early beetle (Pre 62)
good luck

Thanks empi, I guess I'll have to trial some 165's on there. If I could go 165 on the front and 185 on the back then it might look OK.

Thanks

Steve

Do the Axle swap and you should be able to fit 205s on the rear without too much hastle.
Let me know how you go i have an article on how to do axle swap that i can photocopy for you.
Good luck
