Hey all, I have a problem that I need to share with you lovely people on this lovely VW forum.
I'm planning to sell my 68 Beetle (BOOHISS), and as it stands currently, it is two weeks away from rego and I need to buy a new engine as the current
one has a compression problem which stops it from passing inspection.
Now, should I spend the $3500 on the engine, rego and insurance, to get maybe $5000 - $6000 on the car, or would it be better to try and sell it as is
(a rolling shell, but a pretty one). How much would you be willing to pay for a fairly rust free, clean and tidy white beetle with dual kads, a crap
engine, mags, a carerra kit (tastefully done mind you) and a big doof doofmachine? Is it worth the effort to rego it?
ALL HELP APPRECIATED!!!
I would keep it, if I were You....
as You aren't going to get good money for a car that won't pass rego even though You know what it is...
Once its out of Rego altogether it will be worth even less..
Best of Luck

just stick a shitty motor in it and eGay it off.
Ahah. That explains why it's still up at the mech near Berowra station eh?
I'd just get a cheap second hand engine and pop it in. I'm sure someone's got one for sale on here.
For a $200 - $500 max you will be able to pick up a 1600 in good nick.
Put that in and then sell her with registration.
An unregistered beetle is worth peanuts.
Otherwise it is onlt worth parts
yep pop a secondhand one in and keep her![]()
Dude - I heard you take off from the lights at Berowra this morning - that must've been you who called out as I drove past before I parked. Upon
listening to your car drive off, it sounds like you've got a pulled head stud (or two) - so unless your case already has helicoils installed, you
should be able to get this fixed a lot cheaper than $3500 that's for sure!! Take your car into Andrew Dodd at North Rocks, and let him have a look at
it for you.
Also, if you keep on driving it with lose heads, you will soon lose compression completely - hopefully not in the middle of nowhere.

There is also the mexi engine option for $2kish
haven't Mexi engines got cast cranks?
mmm, cast cranks.
:puke
BTW, Klaacks (in fairfield) gave me a worst-case (engine case in need of machining) ball park figure of a bit over $2k for a full rebuild. And that
was including a set of 1640 barrels and piston from memory.
Dual kads on a 1640 would be one sweet power plant.
Keep and get a nice motor built for it. Why do you want to sell it anyway?
Cast cranks - agreed they are not for 8k rev machines but i doubt a stock 1600 is going to rev any where near that.
They serve a purpose and meet a need.
Another suggestion for them

Thanks for the advice.
Squizy: The 3500 figure was for rego and CTP as well as the new donk. I'm kinda wary about going to Andrew Dod,s as he looked after the last Beetle I
had (before I bought it) and the reco he did on the engine was very unimpressive for someone with his godlike status in VW scene. Thanks for the
headups, I might see him anyway.
Is anyone aware of a 1600 engine for sale around the Northern Sydney area? Preferably would like to save that 2000 by buying a decent used one....
And 8k with a cast crank? and then become a fireball? not my style.
better off with the devil you know,
you could spend $5000 on another car and you dont know what mite happen with it:jesus
