Answer: The one I am building of course!
I was trying to keep this a bit of a secret but what the hell...too many people have been asking so I'll spill teh beans *frrrp!*
It started with the Pub Bug, a POS '72 superbug with more cancer than Yul Brenner. It was cheap transport after selling the Fridge of Fury, and
once I got the Statesman I couldnt sell it, so it got left outside pubs and at traistations during drinking sessions.
It got left at Epping station once for over a week because I had forgotten where I had left it after a drinking sesion in the city
It got dynoed at the PF dyno day with a staggering 25rwkW. I broke a handbrake cable doing U turns that day too heheh
So it sat around, I decided to have a bit of a muck around with it, I recon it'd make a classic sleeper seeing as it definately looks slow.
Then I discovered just how bad the rust really was
Repaired most of it, had to cut massive sections out. the other side was nearly as bad!
I removed the spare wheel area n preparation of the radiator as I'm going water cooled here.
Here is the radiator, I found an N13 rad fits almost perfectly, even with the angled filler neck and stock thermo fans! There will be plenty of
airflow once the front apron has been "trimmed" and ducted hehe
The engine build parts. the motor is from a Caravelle van, and should hold together ok, according to what the mental yanks get up to. Not shown is
the pair of turbos I will be running, and the two RB20 intercoolers just as soon as I can figure out where the %^$% I can fit them! Space is
definately at a premium.
Just got the flywheel back today! woohoo! work of art! the stock one weighs around 6kg, this one weighs around 3! Dont worry, I have a plan for the
ring gear before someone has a go about how I'm gonna start it hehe.
Ok, more on the project as it happens!

Awesome. Not into chopping things up, but you look like you are doing it properly, so no real drama.. Plus it is better than what it was huh!?!?
I'm not a fan of chopping up a perfectly good car, but as you can see, it wasnt a prime example, and most people would have just wrecked it for
bits. Considering most of the shabby bits were going to have to be removed for the build anyway, its not a bad way to go.
Supers seem to be pretty unpopular compared to the earlier and later beetles too.
I imagine that the turbos will be small so they spool up fast ! ?
Do you think you'll go for 18 Lbs ? or more ?
That thing will save front tyre wear. Awesome.
boost will be greatly dependant on what I can get the static compression ratio down to. At the moment it is around 9.5:1 stock, which is really too
high for anything over 8 to 10psi with the engine management system. You wouldnt want to try it with a carby application thats for sure...

Respect for forced induction. It just excites me to see stock looking vehicles that blow away V8's, HSV's etc
hehe very very cool! Hey I would have gone to the PF dyno day too and mopped the floor with my 29rwkw.
Can't wait to see it go, are u just round epping secoh? I'm only down in Five dock.
have u looked at steve carter's setup or the V-Force Turbo bug? They are both friggin awesome late turbo bugs
What wheels are you gonna put on it? I dare you to dump it on late porsche wheels and turn it into a german looker
hey if ur cramped for space for intercoolers why don't u go water to air?
Anyway good luck, looks great !
I put 2.4 mm spacers under the barrels.
7.8 :1 , dont know how practical on your water cooled unit though.
Huge hemi cut chambers, recessed pistons.
Can you run B kit stroker pistons ?
Spacers may affect the longevity of the motor under boost, a head gasket problem is far more critical on a water cooled than on an air cooled motor

I may take a mm off the tops of the pistons.
Che Castro, I was living at marsfield, but since moved to newcastle...
It was Steve Carter's bug that convinced me to stick with the wasser and not go WRX or something. I'd like to go the cal look eventunally
but it'll be a sleeper while the mechanicals are sorted out. I'm going to run the wastegate "screamer" pipes down to the stock
pea shooters to keep the stock exhaust look :P
Bloody Awesome
I like it, I like it alot.
Good to see someone else who wasnt deterred by the standard super rust patterns. Did you have to do the floor pans as well ? I did.
What turbos ? What injection ?
Dont go Cal look with it - Go the German Look - nice 17" Porsche cup rims, carbon fibre dash and bumpers, no chrome and a solid colour
Very nice.
Look forward to seeing more of this !!!!
For interest sake, Kurt at Vee Dub repairs and spares in Fremantle has a supercharged wasserboxer in his 75, and I also noticed another Sbug out the
back of his shop with a wasserboxer sitting in the engine bay...... Seems to be the converrsion of choice lately.
Thats awesome Secoh!
Are you doing this stuff yourself?
Im very very impressed!

So far the rust has been in all the usual superbug places, the rear window c pillar area, the channels alongside the front footwells and thats about
it. I have found a pinhole in the passenger rear floorpan, but surprsingly the battery area is fine!
I am using a pair of TD04 turbos, and at this stage it's looking like autronic. MoTec if I win lotto
ALL work so far with exception of fabricating the flywheel from high grade steel has been and will be done by me
Yes very impressive.
I hope that you knew I meant spacers between the barrels and case.
Great work saving the car from the CANCER.
i didnt actually
the wasser has a factory spoacer between barrel and
head, I thought thats what you meant LOL
hehe keeping the pea shooters is cool
go big porsche rims
And people laughed at my twin turbo 2.1l Manx project on this forum..
power to weight ratios rule:thumb
thats why I searched for an Oval.
what is the advantage of two turbos over 1 ?
To anwer the difference with twin turbos question,
with one turbo, usually there is a lag time
till the power comes on, like from 2500 rpm or 3000(some higher). with twin turbos both turbos work progressively(i think), so theres less lag,
smoother power. If youve been in a wrx and then a liberty b4, youll know what i mean.

Well, I have sectioned the floor to check for space for the renault 5sp transaxle.
it looks disastrous at the moment, but so far everything is lining up pretty well!
I have to section a little bit of the floor pan between the tuning forks to lower the back of the box about an inch, then build up some reinforcement,
both for the tuning forks from the metal I remove, and to prevent the gearbox spearing me in the back if I get a big hit from behind.
The drive shafts look like they will be in the right position, and as you can see I have sat a caravelle bellhousing more or less in place to make
sure the motor wont be too far to the rear. so far so good!
I decided at the last minute to do the gearbox conversion BEFORE making all the manifolds...LOL...glad I thought of that before hand!

Hey - good to see that progress is being made ! How does the Renault box mount ? - does it have crossmembers, or is it more like the VW box ?
Are you still planning to do some drawings after you're finished with the box conversion so that people can follow in your footsteps ?
This car is going to be awesome when you finish it !!!
I reckon leave it the baby shit brown colour and put standard wheels and hubcaps on it
Sleeper.
You will need new licence plates - TTVW should do well I reckon !
Look out Reub, the VWRX has some serious competition...... :bounce
Now thats the first time I've seen a Renault 5 Speed, but correct me if I'm wrong.......isn't the crownwheel on the wrong side???
meaning you will have 5 reverse gears & 1 forward....

That is MAD!!!
Make it look as stock as possible and put fake rust on
it and no one will suspect. A friend of mine did this with an old cortina and it worked well. Everyone thought it was a rustbucket untill it beat
them! So cool!

Thanks for the pics.... a very interesting project.... best of Luck
Thanks guys
yeah, a few things:
It's only going to be a two seater, as it'll have a full cage and harnesses eventually anyway, so legally it can only be regoed as a 2
seater anyway.
The CV's are just sitting on the tuning forks, as well as the car sitting way up high. with the box in position, and the car in normal ride
height (or lowered) the CV's line up nearly spot on. I have some caravelle 100mm ones I was planning on using, but they may not be long enough,
in which case I may change to something else such as Supra driveshafts. Apparently they bolt straight up to the R30 gearbox flanges, so I may be able
to source some of those instead of starting from scratch with the R20 ones I'll have to modify.
Yeah I'll make the patterns available to all for the adaptor plate if I make it myself. It'd be nice to get someopne else to do all the
hard thinking for a change though
Yep, the crownwheel IS on the wrong side, but it's "flippable", I just havent pulled the box apart to do it yet.
the box needs to be dismantled and checked before it all goes together so
I'll worry about that after I have made all the mounts for it.
the renault box has two half-cross members that bolt to the flange on each side of the box. I will have to make a completely new setup as it's
far too bulky to work with the tuning forks.
1/4 mile times? no idea, i'm not expecting anything at this stage, as I dont know how well any of this will work
52sec around oran park south would be nice, and so would a 12sec 1/4, but
really who knows at this stage.
I'll do the sleeper thing initially, mainly because I want to make sure it's all sorted mechanically before dismantling it all again for
paint and panel work.

Another interesting project to follow. Nice to think outside the square. I will follow progress with interest.
As for competition Doug, we'll see. Let's just say I won't really have any up here in Darwin, except possibly an EJ20 powered manx.
If I ever get it on the road, I'll make the trip or meet you half way for a run or 2, even if it's just to say we did it
I'm really looking forward to seeing this project come together, it will certainly raise some eyebrows amongst the Falcadore brigade.
Secoh, just as an example of what's possible, Jeff Unwin's turbo/WRX/Haltech Notch gets 3.6 seconds for 0-100 kmh. :thumb
I love the high-tech sleeper concept, if only to stick-it-up the V8 boys!
sounds like a banger !
alot of work but it should kick arse !
