looks cool, but were these ever available out of the factory? http://www.autotrader.com.au/photodisplay.asp?State=NAT&adnumber=WB1752665009

No, but that is not a bad conversion at all. Be worth looking at as it looks like a nice little car. Could be good for a big motor and some wheels. Dump it and it could be one of the coolest cars in Oz. The real concern would be how he braced it when he chopped the top off.
"one of a kind"? ive seen 3 already
chop top but yes a good example of what to do if a tree falls on your type3
That's really bloody trendy!
how could u get away with doing that and not needing roll bars?
The factory actually did make a Type 3 Convertible, but it didn't get into production.
Check link below.

The factory apparantly made 10 notch convertibles , these were given to the head honshos of Vw, 2 are known to exist both owned by Vw in Germany. Where the others went or are is anyones guess.... im still looking....:duh
Yep, seen one too.

good thinking 99, dont think ill be buying it.
My dad did that to a square once back in the 70's... pillars and roof rusted out so they just chopped the roof right off!
Also doesn't show any pics of the canopy up.
Pity, it's kindo a nice idea.
needs a couple of inches taken off the screen ,then it would be sweet
I believe there is one in the Volkswagenwerk Museum...
in Germany...
I've seen pics of it....
I don't know if VW or Karmann made it....
not.
but it looks ok anyway.
