a trickle charger is good value if you want to be able to drive it any time. I'm sure you should do something to the oil too, but I don't know what.

more than a month i would say definately d/c the battery
once they loose a bit charge from sitting conected the plates build up crap and theyre useless
i;ve had a 6 month old battery that was stuffed because i forgot to d/c when my car sat for 2 1/2months

Yep, they build up sulphur or something. Definately disconnect your battery and put it on trickle charge.

Best to disconnect Battery if to be left longer than about 1 month (depends on condition of batt.) May need to to recharge if left longer than 1 - 2 months. Definitely disconnect if to be left longer than about 2month. Don't leave on trickle charge for long time as can "boil" electrolyte away.

Change oil at normal intervals (eg 6 months/5000km) but cahnge to the time-based interval if not started much in that time.
If not to be driven, drain oil and refill with full amount of fresh -- for indefinite storage.
Don't turn the motor over or start & run for brief periods. This does more harm than good! eg. Turning over wipes the remaining oil of the bores etc. and promotes corrosion.

If leaving in a closed garage open the car windows 1/2" for ventilation or air it out occasionally.

So if a car is being driven on weekends, it's ok to leave everything as is? :P

Absoloootely! Even if you drive it, say, once a month you simply service it as usual!!
It needs to be driven & left such that the battery is fully charged up though. Usually only an issue for short trips/winter or dark conditions. Or give it a top-up charge say every 3 months. If you use VW less often, & particularly if parked outside, always leave the tank topped up if possible. Keeps condenastion - moisture out! All those rusted out tanks are from people leaving them partly empty too often.

for any longer than 6 mths id recommend washing the car take for a short drive to dry out any moisture , then give a light polish using turtle wax, even the chrome as its easy and quick to apply . put the car on blocks stops flatspotting the tyres ,drain fuel from carbies ( as it absolutly crap these days ) it actually eats away at the fuel bowls if left .fill the fuel tank but not to the brim to allow for exspansion , put a fuel conditioner in the fuel tank ( stops the fuel from going off ) remove spark splugs squirt in a generous amount of light oil ( 10wt spindle oil ) by generous i meen 4 to 5 pumps with tube exstension on a oil can . put the plugs back in disconnect the coil to distributor wire wind over the mtr with the key count to 5 secs while doing this to coat your cyclinder walls to stop any corrosion . disconnect battery ( maybe get a cheap solar trickle charger from supercheap ) . leave windows down a little to create a air gap in the cabin . throw in a couple creepy crawly baits to kill silver fish and anyother nasties . give her a cuddle cover her up and she will still love you as much when you get back .

and dont forget...for the battery...nothing like a sqaure piece of foam...with some grease on it..palce over the battery terminals will help stop sulphur build ups...
