Sand Driving Legalities & Locations

I'm looking for a bus to bajafy and may also get a buggy one day... love looking at the pics, hate looking at the prices ;)

Does a buggy have to be road registered to be driven on a beach?

Reason I ask is because I probably wouldn't buy a buggy if I had to keep it in reg along with the bus and the (non VW) family sedan. Ideally I'd pack up the family and tow the buggy to the beach or dunes behind the bus, then unload, unhitch and hit the sand with 2 dubs!

Where can you legally drive a vehicle on the beach in NSW? Is there a general law banning all beaches with exclusions or is it generally legal but some beaches are "protected"?

Ya gotta have legit rego (number plates)and get a permit (usually) from the local NPWS eg Stockton Beach, Forster

The beach is classed as a road so yes registration is neccessary as do speed limits either 100/80k max
Permits depend on local councils & national parks. some you just need permits for camping

Thanks. I can't wait to get my baja bus project under way. VWs are a great thing. Even my kids (6 and 4) are beginning to spot kombis on the road for me now. Sadly, so few are for sale... most of those that are have pop-tops :(
