4x4 beetle
matt - April 12th, 2003 at 10:30 PM

has anyone been thinking about putting a beetle body over a 4x4 chassis. i have. does anyone know how hard it would be to pass road worthy and would you need a engineers cert. for it?

do u think a beetle and suzuki sierra would have similar dimensions? wheelbase, front and rear track etc...

you would probably need engineer approval, but it shouldn't be that much of a hassle. Remember the vw-based kit cars like the eureka, their type-approval was related to the chassis rather than the body, so the kit-cars didn't need to be crash tested and adr tested etc, as that was all related to the vw chassis

Dec 2002 issue of Hot VWs has a beetle set up on a custom hi lift chassis- they made a chassis out of box section then mounted the vx floor pan above that ( so that the car could be returned to standard)... looks awsome and has about 40-60 inches of ride hight.

I was thinking more along the lines of suzuki vitara, the only worry i've got is fitting the motor under the bonet!
I have ssen the hot VW mag you are talking about and yes it does look good!!

How about a Super with Golf struts and a Kombi Syncro gearbox etc?

Bugged Again - April 14th, 2003 at 08:04 AM

What about a 70's model swb landcruiser, would make it look much meaner.
After all suzukis are sissy cars :D

WTF?

matt - April 14th, 2003 at 08:31 PM

that would be good but i am not that clever, the reason why i was thinking suzuki was because of the engine size under the bonnet!

type82e - April 14th, 2003 at 09:04 PM

in brazil a company produced a 4*4 based on a beetle engine
not sur eif it would be adaptable to a beetle chassis?
I have an article on it somewhere out of an old vw magazine it looked quite interesting
Also during the war (WW2) they built the 4*4 schwimmwagen I think they also built a few beetle prototypes not sure how many survived

Didn't the German market have a syncro Golf? Might make an interesting mating!!

I also remember seeing a US web page where someone had modified a type 4/Kombi gear box to bring a shaft forward from the pinion. Must be very similar to a syncro GB.

not sure of the details
