Quick one: will a 12v tIII engine bolt up to a 6v tIII case?
ruckus - June 4th, 2006 at 08:54 PM

as the topic suggests, wondering if you can put a twin port late type 3 engine straight into an early type 3?

Hi

The crankcase will bolt up but you need to grind out the bellhousing for the 12 volt flywheel and fit a special starter bush or fit a 6 volt flywheel to the motor.

Have been trying to find out for some time the actual OD of those 6 volt flywheels. Can someone actually measure one and post it here for future reference as the subject seems to pop up quite a bit.

Is it true that there is a problem fitting twin carb's in an early Type 3 while doing the 12V 1600 conversion? I heard they don't fit in early's?

empi - June 5th, 2006 at 11:25 AM

They do fit into earlies.. Super early cars like mine have the smaller engine bay and you can still fit the twin carbs in ... its a bit of a squeeze but is easy. Even if you did want to modify the engine bay tin you could with ease. 12v conversion is not a problem.

Dallas its a pain in the ass but alot of Aussie built type 3s have 200mm flywheels using a 180mm clutch (clayton special i think!!!) In saying this you can use a 12 v starter motor , also you will need to change copper/brass bushing in your bell housing.

Thanks Adam (sigh of relief). When you say 'super early' do you mean 62/63? The one I got is a 64 I believe.

Hi Ad. I've noticed that there are many conflicting bits of info at times here. When I built the motor for th S I went straight 12 volt and used the leftover bits of the 6 volt as land fill! The last bit I had was the crank which I have only just cut the gland nut end off for use as a driver to screwcut the oil seal installer stud. Everyone keeps saying about grinding clearance for the 12 volt ones but never give the difference in diameters for reference. Ol' mate, have you got a 6 volt one out that you can measure for me. Not that I want to use it but it's a bit of useless info we can pass on to others if needed.

Also, do you need an oil seal installer tool? If you do, let me know before the end of the weekend as some of the VICS are up here for the model aircraft champs and I can send it down to you.

Just as a point of interest, the gland nut thread is M28 x 1.5

Na im good thank Dallas.

In the next fre weeks i will be taking the engine out of the notch so i will let you all measurements, there are also a few type 3s at work ,ill check them too.

Ren - its always good to pull the engine out and have a look at the fly wheel and the bellhousing , parts can be changed in cars as old as these.
