Hi All,

I'm new to the website and looking at getting my first bettle. Anyone able to offer me a buyers guide or things to look out for? I'm not sure if to go for a pre-superbug or something from the early seventies yet, need to get out and have a look at a few more.

Any advice would be great.

congrats on your decision to purchase a vw. ovals are where its at(pre 57 1/2). horsepower is overated anyway. good luck.

Your best bet is to watch and read on here for a few weeks, and knowledge will be soaked up and you will be able to make a more informed decision. A lot of answers to your questions may be opinions, so they won't necessarily help. Watching for a while will give you an idea of specific questions you may want to ask.

Buy one with out rust

Biggest post-purchase item ever is getting rid of rust.

As Weapon said - the earlier the better ......... for the purist.

If you want a daily driver Supers are where it is at.

Standard they come with
disc brakes on front
twin brake circuits
indicators
seat belts (some even inertia reel)
high back seats
collapable steering column
1600
IRS
Mcpherson front suspension
Safer collapable front zone
2 speed wipers

Additional to that parts are a fraction of the cost and a good road registered super is the same price as a "project" oval

Ease your self into the wonderful world of air cooled VWs

Dont jump in the deep end

where are you then come to a few events and make a decision

first...get urself an idiots guide...

even before u buy...

there is a great guide in there about what u wanna look for when ur buying...areas of interest...and its plan english..so its easy to read. And it will save u alot of pain and heartache.

go some events....see what u like..u will learn quickly if u like th long nose of an early, or short stub of the supers..

I like 70's and later for daily driver, and early for fun n cruises.

But thats just me.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm looking at something will be driven quite a bit, so sounds like a super might be the go. Good advice on attending a show, I'm in Melbourne, any coming up over the next month or so.

Get John Muir's book...pick the brains of the forum folks....I am in the process of purchasing '58 to be a daily driver, and yes try and avoid rust!

There isn't really an 'Idiots guide to buying a Volkswagen', surely you've got to be having me on?? John Muirs book, guessing I'd find it borders or the like?

its not just a guide to buying but also driving and maintaining said vws. as well as some history

does have a how to buy a vw section that if you are new to vw would be worth reading.
The book is available at most VW specialists such as the advertisers on this forum.
Just as much/more knowledge on this forum!

The book is called something like

"The Idiots Guide To Keeping Your Volkswagen Alive"

(please correct me ppls!)

Written by John Muir in the 1960s. I doubt you will find it at Borders, but maybe Ebay or someone on here will have one for sale. Or try a VW specialist like Vintage Vee Dub Supplies in Sydney.

As Bizarre said, the 'Super Beetles' from 1972? onwards are the best 'daily driver' cars for a VW virgin. Forget anything else
