i would bet you all know what this stuff is and by the look of the photo's most can probably guess where it is
for those who dont know its the warm air delivery pipes into the interior of your beetle ,bus or t3
SO every time you turn on your heaters you get another few pieces of lovely asbestos dust wafting thru the interior

your brakes and clutch are made from the same stuff , so dont go blowing that dust everywhere use water to wash off brake shoes, even some exhaust gaskets too, because of its ablity to take the heat

yep that true ,however this is fed to the interior there is a vast difference between servicing brakes ,and anybody doing it will be aware of the problem or should be ,and simply breathing inside your pride and joy

It is not legal to use asbestos in brake pads...times have a changed...but the dust generated is still BAD so yes,wash with water and don't blow down with air.

They only stopped using asbestos in brakes in the early 90s, I think so if the pads or clutch have been there for a while they may very well have asbestos in them. Always better to assume it does than doesnt.

Do not know what you are worried about. If you mow your lawn you are already sucking in known cancergenics, as mowers do not have cat. convertors. So good luck in the raffle called "LIFE" -says the man driving the VW with the metal dash,non- collapsing steering column,drum brakes,rudimentary seat belts,protruding ignition key,fold forward seats,non laminated windscreen,non side intrustion doored and the only time I have an air bag in the car is when I take the missus for a drive.:kiss

Your lucky. Im in the situation described above *and* I smoke as well. Not to mention riding a motorbike at speeds beyond 50kph I might add (stick that in yer pipe and smoke it Mr. Bracks :vader).

But the extra $50 TAC fee on bikes will cover that :lol:

That's right car folks, bikes pay pretty close to the same as a car in regisrartion, so remember that when you see or hear someone saying they "Should get out of the way"

not all true, my type-3s handbook lists front and rear crumple zones and side intrusion bars in the doors!:o

I drive a steel VW and use the other car I hit (plastic) as *my* crumple zone!!!:lol::lol:

Good point on the bike fees etc, Hellbus. It sucks hard being a Victorian motorist. There is never an election/revoloution when you need one?

Beetles have had collapsable steering columns since at least the 68 model...
I also have the collapsable steering wheel from a 73 Beetle
The big plastic one....
My exhaust gaskets are asbestos free, as its illegal to sell the good ones now...
Not sure about My brake pads... and NOS new ones..
I bought a laminated windscreen as i don't like the safety glass type which was fitted to My car.
When they are broken by a stone, If You are travelling at speed, the windscreen shatters and the glass goes all over You... cutting Your face as it goes past...
I had it happen many times in the good old 60s...

I'll have to check the heating system, but from what I've seen so far, I haven't seen any asbestos...
unless its in the plastic mufflers between the engine and body..
I haven't looked at the pics yet...

It looks like its in the plastic heater mufflers...
I'll replace them with the 50mm fresh air heater hose
just the plastic or the paper foil type...
