Clockwise for Close on the heater. I've been learning that one myself too.
As for the fuel tap, I downloaded a user manual off the Samba and it shows 12 o'clock being main tank and 3 o'clock being reserve, yet that is for
LHD. Mine for some reason is 3 o'clock for main and 12 o'clock for reserve. So work that one out. LOL.
12 o'clock=main
3 o'clock=reserve
1.30=OFF
Cheers

thanks guys, so wats the difference between OFF and main tank? how much is in the reserve?
one thing worth remembering is that at sometime in the cars life, the tap handle may have been fitted on the worng way round, so - with Oval, look at
it this way-
Fully turned clockwise, normal
Fully turned anticlockwise, reserve
1/2 way between, off
that is on my car anyway, - 1230 oclock main
1030 off
& 7

OFF means no fuel can come out of the tank or out of the lines (great for working on the fuel lines/carby)
Basically there is two fuel pick ups in the bottom of the tank, one being longer than the other. The longer pickup is called the MAIN and it is used
while driving around etc. When the fuel drops to below this level, the motor will splutter and you then need to turn the tap to RESERVE.(clockwise)
The RESERVE pick up is shorter and therefore the remaining fuel in the tank is still above this point, which enables you time to find the servo !!!
I think it is around 5lt or about 70km of driving.

hmm interesting, mine has been in the off position all this time.
:P
ah haa, that is why I get further on a tank
I will have to have another look at it, it is not the original, tis a new one I bought a year ago, I will run the tank low & see what happens
my bro loved ur oval btw kim, hows the new car?

eek, just went down & had a look at it, fully clockwise is 10 oclock, off is 8 oclock
& fully anticlockwise is 6.30,
handle is probably on the wrong way round,
new car only had a chance to do 279 km, nice, still sorting a few things
went to Brissie & back on the weekend in the 54 to see Andy up Friday, back Sunday (wel actually 12.50AM Monday morning
fuel cost $214.80
thanks, thats a great help for me to budget the trip to valla and back.
my main tank runs out just over 36 Litres, on the way up I filled up at that expensive port Mac service centre, 32.17 litres 230 miles, - with no
fuel guage to tell you what your fuel usage is you have to be really careful
I got 37.2MPG on the farly level run between Bribane & Grafton but about 33mpg on the hilly bit between Grafton & Syd, same both directions
did u factor in the wind velocity?
According to the sticker on my glovebox reserve is to the right . R= right = reserve.
there was no wind to factor until I got toi Gosford on the way home & started getting thrown sideways
that economy was with 1600SP, travelling between 60 & 65mph and whjere possible maintaining vacuum reading of between 10-14 in/hg
so what is it only ovals that have reserve or do all dak daks have it
beetles up to 1961 (maybe also some 62?)
yea my 61 HAD one but it leaked and the VW supplier here didn't have the switch so i don't have a switch anymore, only my main is accessable. Anyone
here know where to get one? As i think its great to have a reserve.
Cheers
gerbie I'll get u one
also boys and girls if someone tamoered wid da tap and put it back on the wrong way due to the split pin situation
it will be 6 o'clock on
7.30 off
9 o'clock reserve lol
enjoy
Cheers mate :thumb
where is the switch located ,i dont know if i have one on my 62
ts actully a tap and even later models can have them fitted as the hole is still in there with a plug .
Have one on 65 mod
is located centre of fire wall not far left of high beam switch (firewall) so u can reach it while driving b4 he engine starves on fuel.
usually amushroom colour.
My very first beetle was a 64 Custom. No glove box lid, one sunvisor (driver only), painted bumpers, and no fuel gauge. Hence the fuel tap made a return. And yes, 12 o'clock was main, and 3 o'clock was reserve.
