Oval extra gauges
VWCOOL - October 15th, 2006 at 09:02 PM

Is there an aftermarket panel/surround that fits into an Oval in place of the speaker grille that I can install three extra gauges in? I'd like to mount a VDO 2-inch tacho, plus a pair of 1-1/4-inch dials (approx sizes). I might have to make one myself, but hints/info on existig aftermarket product is appreciated...

yeah that looks close... any stockists in Oz? What are the hole sizes?

I think the middle hole would be too small for the tacho.

There was an original VDO aftermarket 'rally' dash for the oval with gauges in it.

Talk to wombatone. He machined one up, looks very good.

You need the one with a clock mount in it. It has a larger cut out in the centre so it can take a full size Tacho.

Or get a smaller tacho . This is the one I had in my old 57 oval. Cable driven tacho. Noice gear. But rare as rocking horse poo and exy these days.

I made this one from 3mm aluminium and had it chromed-but when things settle down a bit-I will mill one the same as Grey57's from some 6mm ally.

I have a guage and have found a grill that looks like the speaker grill but has 1 big guage in the middle with oil, fuel and something else in the middle.
Only good for one guage though.

It uses a 356 cable drive system. Drive comes off the oil pump. See the bits in the grey circle in the pic.

hi glenn, the 3 gauge plates were made by vdo and motometer back in the day, as someone above said if you find one they are $$$. try http://www.thesamba.com  (a search for "rally dash pack" or "motometer" should turn something up) if this doesn't turn up repro's, if anyone is making repro's someone on one of the forums will know.

I think I'll get my machinist dude to CNC a couple to suit 'large' and 'small' VDO gauges
