What model Beetles do these speedos exist on? they have a red mark to indicate when you should change gear
I think they are pretty cool and would like to put one on my 66
Silver
Oh sweet! very similar to what feels good on the Kombi.
funnily enough this came up on vwar.
My '70 standard AS donor and '71 AS Super speedos (MPH) have shift point marks around the speedo, for a four speed
just not big red marks.

pretty sure 71 was the last year in beetles
most 72s had those totally unco speedos with the numbers on the glass (which was actually perspex) instead of on the face then 73 went back to the
normal style just with out the markers
stupid thing was tho they were marked the same in nearly all beeltes be it a 40 hp or a 71 1600 superbug
15, 30, 45mph LOL
ive never worked out why all km/h speedos have a red 50 point?? seen it in beetles kombis and some type 3s

its only km/h speedos that have the red 50km/h
but yea i noticed it on most euro cars too
ex's bmw is like it too

the red dot at the 50 kmh mark and 30mph mark is to remind you of the legal speed limit in residential areas, pass this dot and you are a law breaker! vw's way of keeping you safe (and your fellow pedestrians!)
Hi
As usual the European lawmakers were way ahead of our local ones, 50 kph was the law in builtup areas in most European countries years ago.
I just bought a KPH speedo for my 1300, its marked with build date of 1971, it has an iluminated 50 kph mark, heated rear window, parking light and
ATF warning light, but has no tenths of Ks.
The speedos with writing on the glass were locally made.

my caravelle has shift points but if i took it to where they are it would blow up eventually
silver as that speedo is a clear needle 70mph speedo i'm fairly sure it's out of a bus. all the beetles with that type of speedo went to 80mph or the equivalant in kph (except for a few really rare ones that went a little higher... 140kph?). i remember the beetle clear needle speedo's ( 19?? - 1960/61) having gear change marks but don't remember the colour.
theyve always been red markers but like u can see on my old speedos they turn pink/orange over the years LOL
i thought that first speedo looked like a splitty one
beetle ones had different indicator pilots and no rating for 4th gear
