ebay bidding seems wrong
winerot - October 31st, 2006 at 08:51 AM

anybody is it normal for the bidding to automatically go up
each time theres a bid:o
example=last night i bidded for the first time for a beetle
pedal car, the current bid was $150 so i put in $160 it automatically went to $162 & said im outbidded try again
so i bid $170 it went to $172 & im outbidded again.
i went to $200 & it kept comming up $2 more than me each time so i gave in then it went back to $150.
surely this is bloody wrong & the highest bid should be shown & not keep going up $2 more than my bid each time, its just bullshit & frustrating to say the least.

Someone had probably placed a higher bid amount, but the lowest amount is shown.......for example i might have bid UP TO $250 and the bidding might have only been at $172..so each time you bid a lesser amount than the $250 maximum of mine, then the bids automatically increase....

68AutoBug - October 31st, 2006 at 08:55 AM

Hi Wally,

YES.... thats because someone has already put in a Higher Bid... Maybe $300.... [wild Guess]

so it doesn't matter how much You bid until You get to $300....

It would be the same if You bidded the $300 and someone was trying to outbid You....

Many people use ebay and Do NOT Bid by the Dollar...
but put how much they want to pay...
and leave it.....

cheers

thanks mick for explaining but i still feel the highest bid should be shown at all times.
you wont to know what your bidding against its just a fair way to do things.

Hi again Wally,

the bid should NOT have gone back to $150 though....
it should have stayed at the highest bid...

I see every now and then that New Bidders like Yourself aren't allowed to bid...
New Bidders have to contact the seller...
What happens then i don't know...

BUT... the whole EBAY System is that You get a number each time You WIN or Sell something on ebay...
So if you win 25 things- that is - 25 seperate things from different sellers.. You would be - for example :
Wally 25
that means that You have won and Paid for 25 items- so Your Rating is Good...
the higher the number the Higher You are regarded...
because if you Win and don't pay, then You can be banned by Ebay...
and loose the number etc....
and have to start again....

I don't frequent the Ebay USA scene much but the numbers are highly regarded over there... and if You have a number less than 10.... please don't bid...
is common....

so, it seems that people with LOW Rating numbers are suspect???? First time I've ever thought about it Wally...
but
I've never had any problems with Ebay....
even when i was a 1 or 2 etc....

I hope you can understand all that....

cheers

68AutoBug - October 31st, 2006 at 09:14 AM

Hi again Wally,

Ebay has a lot of Rules and regulations....

before buying now, I check the FEEDBACK...
to see if there are any complaints from buyers or sellers
although I'm only interested in the sellers....

and if i see where someone is complaining...
if it sounds true... I email them and ask what the problem was... I always get a reply.... and then decide to Bid or Not....
I'm usually interested in the Goods... whether they are as good as the seller says they are...

there will always be disputes...
and people selling stuff they don't really have....

thanks lee now i understand:spin:well not really but ebay
would have to protect itself but i still think the highest
amout that has been bidded should be seen by all its that simple.
if it was $300 & visable i might have gone higher but i pulled out, anyway i look at it this way sellers loss not mine.

nuh chris it was for me.

Aren't the numbers related to feedback, form both buyers and sellers? well at least in Aus.

So how do you get a good rating, if you have to buy/sell 25 things before some people will accept your bid? and doesn't that defeat the auction system, allowing everybody to bid on your items and push the price up?

vwjon - October 31st, 2006 at 10:38 AM

winerot, have you never been to any kind of an auction? seen any on TV? the price you are prepaired to bid is your secret, the price that has been bid is shown, that is the price the seller gets,
if i think a bug is worth $500, but the bidding is at $100 and i win, then all i pay is $100 NOT the $500 i was prepaired to bid. so your maximum bid is safe, untill someone bids say $550, then thats where you stop bidding because you believe its only worth $500!
there are some real bargains to be got, but if its something everyone wants the price will just keep goin up!! hope that explains abit more. cheers jon

I think it is called bidding by proxy ;-)

ctefeh - October 31st, 2006 at 12:25 PM

Winerot,
Be aware that people use "sniping" tools as well. These are watching software programmed to bid up to your preset amount with anywhere between 1 and 5 seconds before the auction ends. They can defeat the ebay "highest bid" someone has put in as well.
If the sniper tool bids, the auction ends and the highest ebay autobid can't respond.

there are probably some things on Ebay that I don't even understand or know about....
like Proxy bidding....
private bidding??
Dutch Auctions??
any of those mentioned and I don't bid....

even where the highest bidder is NOT shown....??
I don't bid....

I do use the Sniper to win Me Auctions...

the times I have used the Sniper...
I have Never Lost....

Best thing with Sniper... You can decrease the amount You have bid if you change your mind...
or cancel Your bid...
[before the end of the Auction-naturally]
and You don't put the price UP when you bid with Sniper.

so its an excellent tool.....

I used to be sitting here bidding up until the last few seconds, and thinking I had won....
well, I was winning 5 seconds ago...
Auction finishes... and it wasn't Me....

I couldn't understand it until someone off here sent Me an email... telling Me about it....

all the proxy bid is like a real auction where you tell your representive at the auction that you will bid to 500 dollars so he will bid as if he was you until you are outbid at 501.

dutch is a bit werid for more than one item and private is private. I don't worry about these as you don't see them that often.

twoguns - October 31st, 2006 at 05:02 PM

thats what bidding is all about. it is really about buying at the lowest price possible. sure if there is a lot of interest then the price rises. but in the end the final price is dictated by the second lowest bid or hte person with the least amount of money.

for example i was prepared to bid on a fairing for a motorbike. i was prepared to spend 138 but as hte next highest bidder was prepared to spend only 75, i got away with it for 76.

no, the highest price shouldnt be shown straight up as, this is not the intent of bidding.

for interest... this is why you should never sell your house at auction either. always look at the going prices and name what you hope to get then negotiate. for example, i had a house in west ryde and my neighbours was identical bar an addition of an extra bedroom. anyway they decided to sell about three months before us. despite my rant as per above, they went auction believing the real estate agent. they sold for 495000 after three bids and a convince that the crowd will start, but obviously they were all looking for the bargain. i sold privatly for 630000. interesting, huh.

kombidaze - October 31st, 2006 at 07:10 PM

ebay is a very nasty system of auction you will find that in public auctions the auction continues until the auctioneer is satisfied that no more bids are on offer and with most other web based auctions there is a 5minute grace period after the end time to allow for a higher bid if i wish to bid on ebay being on very slow dial up i just put in the highest bid i am prepared to pay and then forget about it, i either win or loose, i won a pair of 40mm dellortos with manifolds linkages and air cleaners that way, it wasn't a bargain but a fair price and they cleaned up real nice, don't take evilbay to seriously you can get some bargains and you can just as easily get scammed if you can't afford to gamble don't go their.
