Hi Guys,
I got my 71 Super today and noticed that it has a little bit of rust in the rear quarter panel. Just in front of the rear guard down the bottom. It is
not much but it is rust and I dont like it!!! I am starting on a project to restore this car from the ground up so it will bare metalled and painted
again. Is this fixable by a panel beater? Whats the best way to go about it? The rest of the car is in good shape!

depends how much you want to spend
cheaper to use bog or get a good p/beater who will do all the work in
metal which is better for sure !

Thanks Ivan, I dont want to use bog. I rather get it done properly and be done with, but it is doable though? Will they be able to patch it up with
metal or will I have to cut the piece out of another body?

Shouldnt be a problem then. Only really a problem when a daily driver.
If you are going to seperate body from pan then it is even easier.
I "think" you can still get a replacement panel.
If you are going to that much trouble try and find why it rusted there. Usually water coming down fron the rear window seal?
How is the heater channel under it?
Check the other side.
Yeah thanks Blue - when I do start bare metalling it I am going to replace the seals etc. I just want to make sure that it can be fixed with not too
much trouble before I start and then find out after bare metalling the body that it is not able to be fixed.

Supers are notorious for rusting there.
Evidently many people weld up that rear vent to avoid a recurrence of the rust.

Your call as to wether it is worth it.
Yeah I guess that is true - I know that it would add to the price of a respray, but if I am gonna fork out the cash for the respray I guess the rust
is a fairly insignifigant portion?

True - ish.
You just have to make a call if you like THAT car, time to find another, cost to find another,....
ALL cars 30 + years old will have SOME rust.
Just better to know now than later.
Have a REAL good dig around and see what you can find.
IF that is all, then hey, get it repaired.
The other option is to keep this one as a spare, and find a tardy but fine Canberra example of the car and use that to respray.
Then you have a runaround while the reapirs are going on and a donor/parts car as well.
But.........
now i have sown the seeds of doubt....bugger..........

If this is the only patch of rust, then you have a very good one on your hands.
Thanks Doug - I was starting to panic and could see my driveway turning into a car yard. The Mrs would definately not be happy with that.

theres nuffin wrong with having a drive way that looks likea junk yard , although my neighbours do complain some times
Hey! All thirty-year-old cars are going to have a bit of rust, VWs fare better than a lot (even Supers.)
Yogi, shop around a little. If you just take it to the local PB, he'll probably quote you a fortune, and fill it with bog anyway, but you may
find one that will give you a good price. If not, check out local welders/boilermakers (ones with a Harley or Triumph out the front are usually the
best bet,) and ask them for a price just to weld the metal in (even if you have to grind and sand it yourself - the painter should spray a high-fill
primer and sand it back if he's worth his salt,) you should find a good price. There are a few VW places around that carry rust-repair sections
for type 1s, (such as our sponsor,) but I'm not sure about supers.
I say any VW is worth proper repairs. And if you find any rust around the front suspension, it _must_ be metal-repaired.
I had the same prob. Fixed it up myself. Wasn't a big hassle. Stuch my hand in with a screwdriver and got rid of all the foam, plated it from
behind, had a mate mig the plate and leved it off with filler and primer. Just like a new one - if it wasn't Baja'd!
Oh - my hands bigger than a 50c piece!
Also get underneath and check the Heater channels - up where the running boards bolt onto the body , where you step over to get into the car.
Check around the floor where the battery goes.
