Quick question for Oval buffs
penguin - December 16th, 2006 at 04:43 PM

Got a quick question for all the oval 'devotees'.
With an oval, should the bonnet emblem (the VW on just in front of the windscreen) be flat or raised? or did they do both? The front clip has the four fingers, but am curious as to the bonnet. There is no other bonnet emblem down near the aluminium handle.
2ndly, the flange that the rear guard bolts go through, should it be a constant width the whole way long, or shoudl it sort of step in like a really spread out castellated feature?
I am not asking for me, but for someone who I looked at a car for today.

The early 53-6 ovals had the indents in the guard flanges, 56-7 didnt. Same as with the headlight bucket wires the early ones had steel tubes that bolted to the body, later just plastic/rubber tubing covered the wires, with a rubber gromet through the body.

robo, all the front guards should have the tubes from the headlight bucket to the body.

the bonnet should be flat, not raised, and the bracing across the windscreen end should be made from 3 pressings. one across the center with a piece for each hinge overlapping it.

the rear window should be sort of oval shaped

bom tish!
thanks all.
I knwo the rear window is oval sam, same as mine and yours :P
Reason I asked was a car that I looked at for someone and it had the right front clip but the bonnet was raised under the VW emblem and the guy selling couldn't be sure if it had ever been hit/changed. Also as my Ovals rear guards that were straight on the flange that made me ask about that as the ones on this car were indented. So it is probably an 54 or so, but with a later bonnet.
thanks all :)

A 54 will have the 2 indents above and below the striker plate in the door pillars. Also have ribbed doors and a wide spring deck lid. The bonnets are really hard to get for a 54 as they have a seperate bolt hole for the bonnet stay and a triangle plate under the top 4 tab emblem. Heartlights would also be there and interior things like batwing steering and ribbed door handles. Easy way to tell is chack the back of the speedo for the date stamp eg: mine has 1.54 which is jan 1954. Some of these traits ran over until June 55.
Good Luck, T54
