Baja Bug Ocean crossing
Iwish4aSynchro - March 11th, 2007 at 08:59 PM

Hi all i am trying to find info or pics to show the kiddies.

Does anyone remember the Baja Bug that crossed the oceans around the world, u know I think it was in the early to mid eighties.
If i remember correctly it was a world record round the world crossing by sea and land...

I remember it was a red maybe 60's mod Beetle with Baja fitout.
It was on the news and all..
Cant remember the year for sure but i know i wasnt dreaming it......

This reminds me of Ben and Eleanor Carlin who went around tha world in 1950 in an amohibious jeep named Half Safe, which is now retired with honour at Guildford Grammar School in Perth W.A.

Any more pics anywhere?
So the mental pictures i have in my head are apparent of the Bass Strait attempt
Overcast day huge swell, really rough seas, not the best day..
But better it happen there than 20,000 nautical K's from land..

So what year was it???

amazeer - March 14th, 2007 at 09:58 PM

It was at Valla in 89 I think. The ill fated voyage was probably shortly after that.
