Hi,
Have been travelling with my bike in the back seat of the beetle for a while now and figure there has got to be a better way. Does anyone have any experience with bike racks?
On my other car i use rola roofies with bike racks fitted. Have also tried one of those racks that straps to the back of the car with little success since the beetle has no horizontal surface at the rear aside from the bumper.
Has anyone tried making something out of a decklid rack?
Interested to see whatanyone else has tried.

how many bikes are you carrying?
when I was carting my DH bike on the back of my '64, I never used a rack.
the bumper brackets were close enough to the same distance apart to the wheels on my bike.
I simply sat the bike inside the bumper, ran a tie down strap from the handlebars to the rear wheel arch and another tie down strap from the rear seat stay/swing arm to the other rear wheel arch.
never moved a cm.

other then the standard towbar bikeracks, you could be really cool and modify a beetle roofrack to suit bikes. one of the guys around here has done it for a type 3, simply taken a slatted wood rack, welded a quick-release hub to the front edge of the rack to attach the front forks and a V bar to the back edge of teh rack for the back tyre to sit in, not sure if i have any pics, but if you look through previous DOVW Vic pics it is a slammed white notch with 2 cruiser bikes on the roof, definitely a cool look.

I just have a woodslat roofs rack, i turn the bike upside down and have the brake hoods over the front horizontal bar, and take the seat off, a simple rachet strap and your set, doesn't move an inch, only problem is that this would only really suit a road bike, but i'd like to see the modified roofrack with the quick release hub on it...

oops, that shot is too early, Im sure later on he attached the bikew the right way up with the quick release hubs, you can buy the hubs with a short bar and bracket attached ready to weld or bolt on from bike shops. definitely what i would like to do for my car.
