Yeah I know someone who got one recently but i don't think they know much about them?
I don't think it's a kalita, I think it's an Apollo, that's the buggy that preceded the Kalita.
They were all but identical, the differences were hardly worth a mention, mostly the side pods some bonnet moldings and the windscreens.
As far as who made them, where and when? I don't think you'll ever know for sure unless you find a hidden name plate somewhere.
It was probably from the early 70s and these molds passed from one person to another, usually for very little money and many tales of shattered
dreams.
Sometimes they went from state to state for no reason other than one state getting tough on rego, while another goes a bit easy for a few years.
The history of so many of these buggies can be called "the boulevard of broken buggy dreams"
Whatever its history was, should be of no consequence, it's future is in your hands and that's all that really matters.
"Dirtbugger"
There you go, a third incarnation of the same basic buggy only this time with a LWB and square headlights.
I recall seeing that buggy parked outside the Parramatta Rd Workshop back in the mid 80s.
The thing I recall most about it was the rear mounted gas tank.
Here is another Kalita AKA a Playmate
I think it was made in central Qld
dunelimo
I only edited the name"dirtbuggy" to "Dirtbugger"

Hi I can't add much to the above but I was lucky enough to pick up a kalita a few years back.
She's definitely a different breed her elderly owner reluctantly gave her up for a mini van to tour Tassy
So i picked her up (ebay) in Sydney and drove her back up through the center to Darwin.
Good luck with yours they are certainly rare.
Still got this one Ian??
as I understand it, the KARLITA was the second design to come out of the J&S (Jeff Simmons) factory in the 70s. Initially only in SWB form, then the moulds were sold off to a qld company who lengthened the car to go on a lwb pan... and probably did that evil light stuff too. Heltoy's car is an early one. should ask him for some pics of it before he repainted it. It was in really good nick (if you like metalic bronze) and had been built back in the early 70s when they first came out.
No sold it and kept the engine out of it.
It was heaps of fun on stockton beach,
The bloke who has mine just wanted a car to run around town in.
the bloke lives near Nelsons Bay , but he said he want be going near the beach.
We put the engine in BUZ that Rose raced at Warwick
