jo_tas - July 19th, 2007 at 09:21 PM

Hi there
I may be moving to Newcastle for a job!
Does anyone have or know of a cheap room/flat for rent?
Would be great to shack up with another veedubber!

Thanks,
Josie

When you looking at going to Newcastle....
Hope it all works out well for you

jo_tas - July 20th, 2007 at 12:05 AM

Hey
Not sure how soon the move will be (if it happens)
Just thought it would be good to arrange SOMETHING incase i get offered it.
The thought of moving to a place i've never been before terrifies me as well as excites me!!
I know i like that northern NSW area though, from previous trips to that area for Valla etc..

VDUBXTC - July 20th, 2007 at 08:31 AM

Hey Jo.

If you look for somewhere, try these area's.

Mayfield,
Waratah,
wallsend,
These are all area's around the uni which is cheaper and more often has rooms available.

The more expensive places are
Bar Beach,
cooks hill,
The junction,
Newcastle
you wouldn't expect to find a room for under $200 a week in these areas.

Please don't get the wrong idea with this.
But Newcastle is nothing like the northen NSW area.
Unless you get out to the out skirts like maitland and places, Newcastle is a very dirty shity city.

Good luck with it anyways.
Jace

jo_tas - July 20th, 2007 at 08:03 PM

Hey jace
Thanks for the heads up.
If i get offered the job, i'll be going there to work, not for a holiday so i can put up with a shity city lol.
The expereince i would gain in the job would be worth it (i hope):kiss

CHADMYSTER - July 20th, 2007 at 08:09 PM

What other city can survive earthquakes ,bushfires and now floods and still have a smile on its face. Jo, there is also a VeeDub club here as well. Good luck with the job.

Hi Jo Tas.

I have lived in Newcastle quite a few years. My family all live there and I work in Dubbo 5 hour west.

A couple of corrections. Newcastle used to be 'dirty and shitty' for want of a better description. Since the foreshore redevelopment and the closure of BHP it has made some great gains and there are still parts that are a bit ordinary but as a city the people are wonderful and the lifestyle is quite unique in a good way. VDUBXTC's advice on suburb price and choosing cheap accommodation near the Uni is spot on. During my undergraduate I live in Wallsend, Jesmond, Glendale/ Cardiff and Edgeworth. As you get close to the coast the prices definitely go up. I'm in the process of moving back.

Yes there is a Vdub club there. I don't know how it's fairing. When I last inquired about joining apparently you have to live there to join it seems. Going back on a weekend basis and having 4/5th's of your family there isn't good enough. I got a fairly abrupt email reply when I asked about the club a year or two ago.

I moved to Newcastle from Queensland and apart from the haphazard layout of the major roads it's a lovely place to live. I would recommend it but certainly research where you are going to live for sure.

Lets see how i go!

70Beetle - July 21st, 2007 at 07:40 AM

Nothing wrong with Newcastle. I have lived here for 21 years and no plans on leaving. We have a good vw club and about 16 cars came to our last gathering.

If your succesful let me know and I will help you find somewhere to live...i have plenty of contacts.

Sure the city council is doing work to make the place look pretty. but dam if you can say that place is not dirty :duh no idea what parts of the place you are in.
Even now BHP has gone, the black ash, soot still floats around the air. you look up at the stars and sure you can see some stars. but as you would know as well as i Bronze, even if you go over to stockton you can see the stars more clearly.:kiss

Again , not trying to put you off Jo.
just trying to put it all up front for you.

yeah. i thought that to after living there for over 28 years.
But since moving away i would never go back for more then a weekend.

But in saying that it has the best of both worlds with the country life, city life, and coastal life in the one placewhich i will agree its nice and convenient place in that way

jo_tas - July 21st, 2007 at 12:38 PM

Thanks again.
I'd rather know all the facts about the place, good and bad!

Spook - July 22nd, 2007 at 06:56 AM

Coming from Tasmania your going to be in for a culture shock one way or the other.

Newcastle, the city itself, is a hole in the ground. No question. Hunter street is full of empty shops & derelict buildings. You could shoot a cannon down there on any given day & not hit a sole.
The council keep coming up with ideas to revitalise the joint but they all go belly up.
A Newcastle Herald journo wrote years ago, "Newcastle is dead, the council just refuse to hold the funeral."

Having said that, you don't need to get to far from the city centre for things to improve.

The beaches are great & if you don't like the surf, we got a lake too.

We do still have heavy industry, but not to the extent we had 40 years ago.

Where abouts in Newcastle is the job??

Don't believe everything you hear about Newcastle. Yeah the CBD is abit of a ghost town, but the rest of the Hunter is a great place.

Hi
We don't realy have a club it's just me and the guys organising criuses now.

Sam use to look after the club, but he's in Sydney now.

Our next one is to Sawtell with all the Sydney guys 18th & 19th of August.

Hey 70 Beetle our last cruiz we had 30 odd vw's there remember it was the Morpeth Pit Stop Cruiz. Check out link below
http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=52308

Anyone that want's to join up just send an email to dnvk@hotmail.com and I will let you know when we are going on a cruise. All kinds welcome I don't discriminate.
I've lived in Newcastle now for 29 years, I live at Maryland and have done so for the past 17 years I love it. Let us know when you are up and we can organise to all meet up somewhere.
Good luck with the job.

We just got back from xmas in july cruise to Bathurst with the sydney club it was a great run in our oval not to cold either and we had fun driving around the track.

CU
Rose

Hey VDUBXTC let us know next time you are in town or send me a u2u with your email so that we can let you know when our next cruise is.

Spook - July 22nd, 2007 at 04:47 PM

Teralba is a nice little spot.
Wife's grandparents have lived there forever & wouldn't be anywhere else.

I take it your looking on the net for rentals.
You want to look at places like Toronto, , Blackalls Park, Fassifern, Boorigal, Woodrising, Boolooroo, Speers point, Argington. They're all within about 15 clicks.
Warners Bay gets a bit pricey.

jo_tas - July 22nd, 2007 at 04:47 PM

Thanks Rose.
My fiance thinks i'm mad even considering moving to a city i've never been to. Which i can understand.
I'm putting it all on the back burner until i get offered it (or not).

And thanks Spook
Will keep those places in mind..
But i'm not going to worry too much about looking for places just yet.. This is all still just a maybe.. lol

Trust me.
On a long distance move, you can't be too organized.
