anyone building or has a german looker?
Learner - August 26th, 2007 at 05:45 PM

in the past few weeks i went from baja to german look. i thought why build an off road when i got a subaru to do that. plus i spend 90% of my driving time on the road.

this weekend it was my first time to try to fit my new gearbox in but i f*@#74 it all up. the car i now on th side street minus the engine. stupid me forgot o take the axels out and i don't have th proper tool to do it. so now i'm waiting anoter 2 months to raise funds to replace my trans mouts, boots and get the proper tools.
one thing i learnt is: if you've never done it before do as much research as u can and don't forget the equipment!!!!
anyway since the car is not not running at all, i will get the cip1 headlights with the city lights and convert them to HID with angels eyes. my father in low just got himself a RS4 convertble (only 28 in aus) and the way the headlight turns around coners has amazed me. another thing i'm working on is electric mirrors which i'm not to sure which model to go for. i was thinking the c4 ones from citroen but they look pretty big. might just have to reshape them. or oes anone know of a decent looking set( small speedy looking like a bullet maybe?)

and here is the future plan. wide fenders back and front (the stock looking ones made out of carbon) from skirt custom side skirt replace the back apron to fibeglass or carbon.

dropped spindles with 2" narrowed and adjustable beam, brembo or apracing disk brakes all round.

engine is to be decided. i don't know if i want to got the porsche way or subaru.
next is to cusomise an electric sunroof. and chopping the whole thing by 1-2"

ask u can see this is a long term project. your welcome to comment or give out ideas. but i'd like to know and see who's got GL bugs around. cheers

theres a german guy in perth who has a real nice dark blue cabrio with the full on euro look, i'm sure there are a few perth guys who'll point you in the right direction.

Be prepared to get your cheque book out  With the mods that you've stated above you'll need to.

Plan out on paper what you want in your GL, so that when you are in the build, you do things in a logical order. This will save you time, money and heartache.

What model are you modding?
All the best with your project.
Cheers

Hi

Im fan of the German look as well, no Nancy boy 135s for me. You can do it in stages to keep the cost down. You only loose money on project like this if you loose interest and sell it. Read the German Look site well, particularly the forums for lots of ideas.

Hi

I've done a bit of a German Look on my daily driver 1303. It still needs a coat of paint and bigger motor, but for a few thousand bucks I have a great handling and stopping car.

It has,
17x7 wheels
Skinny front struts
Early type 3 front disc callipers
Steel 944 trailing arms with discs + 944 torsion bars and spring plates
Whiltline adjustable rear sway bar.

Hi Dino

Its a perfect P plater car, good handling and stopping, low power. I have a 1776 in the garage but the 1600 will do him for a while. The car actually looks better in the photos than it is, I bought it from Menangler earlier this year, the only rust it had was under the battery.

hi steve,

lookin at the photo there doesnt seem to be a great deal of rear chamber, have u done anything to dial it out? looks tops :thumb

Hi

I used the 944 arms & spring plates, they have the same adjustment as the VW ones, I set them up for maximum + camber and ended up with a little -. I also fitted urethane on the pivot point and on the inner torsion tube, I used the Porsche 944 outer rubber bushes with the alloy end caps.

i was just wandering, what's one of the first mods i should look at doing?

Learner - August 30th, 2007 at 12:41 AM

beautiful cars by the way!!!! keep it up!

david777 - August 30th, 2007 at 07:00 PM

Get your gearbox in...
but seriously, before you start worrying about looks, my thoughts would be:
1. fix any rust
2. make the car stop well and handle well.

I'm more of an early sort of guy and this is one of the cars that made me decide to build a bug.

i'll convert into irs first then i'll do what i can abot the suspention. the look is my last thing in mind. it's suppose to b a daily driver, but my fiance hasn't got her licence yet so i'm using her car for now.

i like hugo's car from the germanlook forum. though his wheels looks odd but i think he is fixing that.

1303Steve - September 5th, 2007 at 12:03 AM

Hi

I like Hugos car as well, but in some shots the 19 inch wheels look a little Tonker toy / Hotwheels.
