darrinc - August 30th, 2007 at 10:30 PM

hi everyone, just new to the vw world and at the ripe old age of 39 have just purchased a 1966? 1968? bettle, for my eldest son and i to restore to it's former glory, with the possibility of a full herbie conversion (minus the soft part in the roof).is there anyway of telling exactly what year the vehicle was made and what size motor it has????also any idea what colour herbie was in the early movies?
one more thing are there any magazines in australia that specialise in vw???
any hel;p appreciated.

Big difference between 1967 and 1968 year models..

beetles up to 1967 had sloped headlamps and towel rail bumpers.. have a door handle inside to open the door

1968 beetle has flat hubcaps, squarish bumpers, larger glass... lever to open door.. black knob on 1/4 window..
vent in front of the windscreen...
vertical headlamps...

cheers

Welcome to the world of aircooled VWs.

Your engine is a 1966 1300cc.

Is you chassis number 115622399? If it is you have a 1965 made in July. 195622399 is not in the book.

If you're serious about VWing you need to get two books.

How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive. A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot, by John Muir. Otherwise known as the VW Idiots Guide.

Any good service manual. I have Murray Books. VW Beetle Models 1100 to 1500. 1954 to 1971. Book number 46.

There are others. All are worth having. The best is by Bentley. Theye are rare and expensive in Oz.

Herbie numbers and stripes are available on the web.

I you do your car up as a Herbie expect to get a lot of attention. People will shout, "Hey! Herbie!" as you drive past.

I had a 1973 done up as a Herbie. Only purists cared that it was the wrong model. Most of us couldn't care less, so go for it.

Unless you really want to play with your engine, I have only one thing to say to you, "Keep it stock standard."

Good luck!

darrinc - August 31st, 2007 at 08:37 PM

thanks heaps,i want to keep the drive line stock the only thing i intend on changing is the paint and decals, after dealing with people that have changed engines and transmissions from one thing to another over the last 20 odd years i am a firm beliver that the people that built the car did what they did for a reason.
i will post photos as the build progresses and no doubt ask other silly bloody questions as i discover the world of air cooled vehicles.
thanks again for the info everyone.:thumb

welcome and enjoy.
The 1300 engine can really peform and is reliable so its good enough to keep it stock.
oh and DONT take everyones word for gospel on here (incl mine!!!) we are mostly here to keep learning (even with my 50 yrs of vw's in the family) and help find that elusive part or model.

Richard the 2nd digit being 9 instead of 1 is correct
that just means it was an australian built beetle
most of the manuals around are all printed overseas so dont list aus chassis numbers

as a few others have said the 1300 single port motors are almost bullet proof
if the engines had any major work done in the last 10 years or so u may even find its been upped to 1600

good luck and welcome to the nut house

darrinc - September 4th, 2007 at 09:10 PM

thanks again everyone,i just order my copy of the idiots guide to keeping your vw alive, should arrive next week?and managed to lay my hands on a factory manual from 1969 from our archieves of old w/shop and parts manuals that didn't get sold of when the dealership gave up the franchise, all for the price of zero (for the w/shop manual anyway).
as far as i can tell no work has been done on the 1300,it does appear to be leaking a fair amount of oil so any advice on what seals normally go would be apprecated.
also floor pan appears ok,but can anyone give me some advice as to the rust prone areas so i can check them out, from what i can see body appears good for it's age (it's holding up better then i am considering it's 3 years older then me).
one more stupid question.
i hear people talking about type 1,2 and 3 what the hell are they refering to????
once again thanks for the help, and much appreciated.

barls - September 4th, 2007 at 09:17 PM

type 1 = beatle/karmann ghia
type 2 = kombi
type 3 = station wagon/ fastback/ notchback
type 4 = late kombi 1700 and bigger / also later model station wagon ie 411/412
