Was cruising around tonight, then i got this god awful vibration happening in the bug. It happens when i give it a quick rev or when i back off the accelerator. Was thinking it could be the engine or gearbox mounts. Any other suggestions? The vibratoion runs right thru the froor, but very evident thru the shifter.
It sounds like the mounts might be gone
Oh bugger, i dont think its the mounts, was looking around while mate revved the engine, its more of a very nasty tinny rattling that is happening almost the entire time the engine is running now! Doesnt sound like the exhaust baffles have let go, more like there is something terminal happening in there. I am not happy. Any of the Adelaide boys free within the next week to have a listen for me and give some advice?
check the rockers make sure one hasent letgo
Is it misfiring or still running on all cylinders?
If it is misfiring, check all the usual suspects (plugs, leads, rockers, manifold boots, ignition timing, etc)
If it is still running on all cylinders, check things like the fan (debris caught in it or blades missing), ignition timing, manifold boots .... were
you giving it a bit of a flogging? Drag racing style starts? Has the flywheel recently been re-attached to the engine? If so, you may have had the
flywheel come loose - lets hope not for your sake!
Most engine/gearbox vibrations are obvious through the gear stick as the shift rod is 'normally' connected to the gearbox with a coupling that
doesn't have any slack in it - the rest of the car is shielded from these vibrations by the engine and gearbox mounts.
Let us know what it is....
R
Or cam gear loose from incorrect backlash.
Mine started as a similar noise and it ended up being the Crankshaft pulley was loose. Unfortunately it has damaged the end of the crank and now it's rebuild time.
No misfiring at all, just this God awful noise! A closer listen and it seems to be coming from the fan shroud, so I'm hoping it's just crap logded
in there, it was a windy night with lots of debris from trees flying round when it happened. Will take the shroud off and have a look, more details
tomorrow, my kids need a bit more attention than the bug right now! It sure is a learning curve with these engines!
No drag racing, not really driving it too hard, nothing has been touched on the motor as far as flywheel, etc.

i just replaced a fan that had cracked what a bloody noise that was good luck
I had a similar thing from a accelerator cable.
seemedto be geting brushed by the fan.
Would explain y u heard it when you were off the throttle cause tension is released in the cable...
Before removing fanhousing you can stick your hand around the back of the fan hsing (engine off of course) and check for foreign matter in the fan. A bit of electrical tape is enough to make some pretty weird noises. Removing the gen or alt only, with only loosening fan housing, is the easiest way to access fan if it requires replacement.
Well the light tinny rattle has developed into the all too familiar sound of a bearing knocking! Damn. Car is now for sale as is in the for sale section, thanks all for the advice.
