I know of a few ex's that would have caused a lot more grief for the car than any regular joy rider would. very lucky

years ago I bought my first new car, GTi, the then long standing gf borrowed it. I got a call from a car park attendant. She wiped it around the armco and trashed every panel ... because 'I seemed to love the car more than her' ... needless to say, the GTi was replaced, as was the gf.
