Yes it is... But was VWoA dealer Ordered. From what i can gather the Sticker on face of MPH Speedo to read KPH, a legal requirement from 1967 in Australia. I would like some more info on this as i have not seens many of these and if it was a legal requirement from 1967 why is there not many around. I have herd it was one of those laws passed and then rejected because of the motor industry.

Tass its a sticker you could buy

Grey 57 - January 1st, 2008 at 01:17 PM

Not a sticker. Its a printed cardboard insert. We had one on the speedo on the 64 Beetle that my son was getting around in last year.

I would put in the rarish accessories category. As the speedo would have to have been pulled apart to fit it. Has it got a VDO part number on it?

Tazz - January 1st, 2008 at 01:49 PM

I would assume it would have to have a 311 --- --- A for VW australia.

So thats why i got flashed(Coppers) following a bunch of Qldlanders in the missus old 61 sardine top, i thought 75 was cruising speed.

I can remember in the 70's you could get an accessory that was like a tiny little plastic gearbox. You put it between the end of the speedo cable and the gauge & it would make you mph speedo & odometer read in kph. I wish you could still get them, I've seen them for sale in the UK, mostly aimed at the motorbike market and going the other way to make them read mph instead of kph.

Regards,

Matt.

kombikim - January 2nd, 2008 at 09:55 AM

yep, those gearboxes were good, depending on what your mph speedo reads up to. ie not much good on VW speedos, as they only read to 80 or 90,
but they were OK for speedos that read to 120

VW-VARIANT-L - January 2nd, 2008 at 01:00 PM

I have 2 of these Type 3 speedo KPH stickered gauges, dated 1964 and 1967. All Australian Type 3 until 1972 came stock with MPH speedo's. In 1972 they changed to the black faced gauges with aussie VDO ones also in MPH. You could also get the German made black speedo in KPH.
Tazz, the source for your info re. 1967 changes is from the UK and is incorrect, the stickers were optional aftermarket.
