NRMA inspection!
ronster - May 23rd, 2003 at 11:32 AM

Hi all,

The NRMA Vehicle inspector just rang and gave me a list of problems:

Battery not secure
Screen washer not working
Rust behind instrument panel, left door, both running boards

water entry into the vehicle, mats are wet for some reason
Air flow tubes need replacement
Manifold pre-heater tude need replacement

Rear suspension shows signs of wear and tear
Engine idle too fast
Server engine hesitation
Speedo noisy, pro need to replace cable
Front tyre wear, needs alignment

Approx. $1200 to repair + parts

Is that a fair estaimte??
I supposed stuff like this is expected for an old car...

what year and model is your car ???

All "normal" things

Will cost you couple hundred at the most - if you do it yourself. If you take it to someone like V Force they would charge you "about" that but it will all be done RIGHT.

Battery not secure - ok easy fix

Screen washer not working - none do. They work off the spare tyre and take water through the dash. If you really care pull it out and put an electric one in

Rust behind instrument panel, left door, both running boards - left door change it. Instrumant panel. The big black panel you can see fron the bonnent is where the water comes in from the grate above. There is a drain there. Moren than likely the seat around here is gone and that is where the water spills onto the petrol tank and down the A pillars. It then comes out in the front foot wells. Have a look at that black panel and if it is rusty that is your leak problem
Running boards - $150 for two new ones. He does mean boards and not sills?

water entry into the vehicle, mats are wet for some reason - see above

Air flow tubes need replacement - well change them

Manifold pre-heater tude need replacement - whack on some duals!. Seroiusly replace it. easy done

Rear suspension shows signs of wear and tear - this will be the rubber donuts around the torsion bars. A bitch but an easy fix

Engine idle too fast - tune

Server engine hesitation - this will be tune/ probabally has a 009 / and the preheat manifold holes

Speedo noisy, pro need to replace cable - easy fix

Front tyre wear, needs alignment - does it have the "super shimmies" Other wise a alignment.

As long as there is no rust round the back window or A pillars or front quareters it should be fine.
Depends what you are paying too.

Bargain them down

vw54: It's a 74L bug. Not my car YET. Planning to settle tomorrow, just want some 2nd opinions from you veterans to see if there's any reason why I shouldn't go ahead with it.

blue74l: the owner is asking for 5k. Def no rust around the heater channel / a pillars.

I know some work will need to be done since it hasn't been run for awhile. I guess I just need to know it is not 'terminal'.

Will see whether I can bargain them down.

Thanks heaps guys!!

5k :o:o:o hell no, waaaaaay to much.

Bizarre - May 23rd, 2003 at 04:38 PM

Depends - a good spray job is $2-3

A good interior is money

A Perfect one is $8k

If you are happy with the money and it has good rego, tyres, paint and interior...

hehee... don't worry. it's not like he's buying an overpriced Mk4 Golf :P (don't worry... i have one ;))

tho considering it's condition it's not bad. and i've seen one's with rust, bad paint jobs and well used interiors going for around the same price :o

structurally it's great, with no accident damage (but some degradation of the bitumen sealant in the front boot) and low mileage

tell them all the work u need to get done, make it sound hard and realy $$ and they will drop the price no worries....

The only real worry would be if the comment about the running boards turns out to be heater channels.
Make sure the heater channels are not rusted out - what the running boards bolt onto.
