Does anyone have information regarding regulations as to how a car should be tied down to a car trailer; ie are there guidelines as to what should be used? Chains, straps, etc.

Understand rope is illegal ...also the car must fit within the confines of the trailer ...thats in NSW at least

its a standard chain, its stamped with the australian standard number on every third link im sure.

Not sure if its a requirement but I tie my car on with straps over the wheels so it still floats on its suspension. I have noticed alot of tilt tray trucks also tie cars down like this now, and only ever the front or rear wheels strapped?

Where did you buy the straps from?

I've seen them around and they look a little more secure than the chains I currently use.

get truckie type straps.. supercheap auto etc have them, lash out on some chunky ones though.. you only really need two. One for aroung the front beam, one for around the rear beam .. I also use a chain just for good measure. Not sure about legalities. You just need to check them a few times along the way and possibly tighten due to some settling in.

Not sure if this will be any help, however I know the tie down straps are ok.

Unfortunately most states differ slightly, however so long as the car is secure there are no issues.

I also know that you can use what are called Spyder Straps. They are like a T-section strap that goes over the side and top of the wheel and secure straight to the trailer (all good if trailer has tie down points).

Thanks. Since I am travelling to Victoria through NSW from Qld, I want to make sure that what I think might be safe here is viewed the same interstate. I only ever use rated chains and tie-downs, so the race car was certainly not leaving the trailer in any sort of a hurry.

Ratchet tie downs are the best becouse the can stretch alittle and they lock close .If you look at kg or lbs on them remember you are adding this by 4 becouse of one strap on each corner . Go for abit more then the weight of your bug .
I allways tie my car down stiff ( rear at shockys with a bracket on bottom bolt and front at bottom trailing arm with hock end over it ) A bug weight is fine this way ,plus race cars are very stiff in suspenion (over 15years this way ) .Plus out off gear with hand brake on !!! You can all so cross your straps at the back to help stop car from moving sideways .
The over tyre t straps are good but abit hard to get over tyre if car is very low and you need to pull inline with the tyre ( front of tread ).

For what it worth SA Police these days are checking cars on trailers far more frequently than before and, by all accounts, will give you a ticket if you're using rope, so go for the ratchet tie downs.
