My Dad died last night. He was towing a van along the birdsville track in November. 2 months later he looked like a POW with no meat on him at all and was in considerable pain that even morphine wouldnt help.

If you dont want to give up for yourself, think of what your family has to see as you are going. Its terrible shit.

Chris you have my condolences for you and your family,and fags didnt help my dad either even though he had given them up,emphysema was one of the complications that went against him when he died nearly 3yrs ago now..

My dad went the same way. Found a lump near his collarbone then wasted away to a skeleton. He gave up, but only near the end. Not a nice way to go and hard for the rest that are left. You have my families condolences. All the best.

My gran went the same way last year, I feel your pain.
She was stubborn, smoked right until the end, made the palliative care nurses wheel her out into the courtyard several times a day.

We're very sorry to hear Chris. I dont understand what drives people to take up smoking these days. People who smoke don't look cool, they stink (they may not smell it, but non-smokers can smell them from a mile away), it's just a waste of money and a waste of a life. Do they realise how much it affects others, not just in the present, but after they have passed on from smoking related illness's. I watched my Nan waste away due to lung cancer, it was devastating. At least she had an excuse. When she started it was thought to be trendy and the risks were not known. People are still taking it up no though, and for what?

I lost my father when i was about 9.. he was a smoker, and a drinker, and didn't eat too healthly either.
He had cancer but actually died of a blood clot in his brain while walking out the front doors of the hostpital after being told the chemo was working.. Just goes to show you should live your life for the moment cause you never know what might be around the corner..

Back when I was working for an advisory firm, I was asked to do a job for one of the manufacturers - I refused to work for the "merchants of death" - sort of stunned the boss but he was OK with it.

The problem with smoking, like lots other risks, is that people think it won't happen to them personally. I was in a band a few years back and we played a very ritzy 21st down the southern highlands. The father of the b'day boy was wheelchair bound with an O2 bottle and all. Apparently, he only had months to live. During his speech the dad told all his son's friends to, "stop smoking" coz, "this will happen to you". After the speeches, the b'day boy came into our dressing room and apologized for his dad, "banging on about all that no smoking crap", whilest bumming cigarettes off our guitarist. I couldn't believe my ears.

I guess some people just can't be told...

Thanks for the kind words. The good thing is that it happened so fast. He didnt know he was sick until 6 or 7 weeks ago. A week ago he was given 3 months to live without treatemnt or 12 months with it. 2 lots of ray treatment later he got pneumonia. 24 hours later he was gone.

In November he was driving around dirt tracks of the desert, without any idea. By Christmas he looked pretty bad but the only symptoms is that he had lost probably 10-15 kgs and had a sore hip. 3 weeks hindsight says that was cancer of the lung pushing up against nerves in his spine. By the time that was discovered he developed pain in his neck, which was another tumour pressing up against his spine. There were several smaller tumours around and in his bones. Once they figured out what it was, he was sent home. 4 days later he was back in with pneumonia.
It happened so fast in his case. Which is a good thing.

He smoked when he got home too. Not much point battling him about that, not like he was going to catch it twice.

I am really sorry to hear about your dad. The body can be amaazingly cruel to itself sometimes. I see the after effects of smoking at work all the day. I look after patients who have had massive lung resections - big chunks of their lungs cut away due to disease and its awful to watch.

I was at a shopping centre the other day and this girl in her early 20's was leaning against the "No smoking" sign puffing away. I asked the dumb ass if she could read!!! I think that I should be able to walk into a shopping centre without myself and my daughter inhaling someone elses filthy fumes
