it's till a bargain at this price. sorry if I've blown some people's quiet little discovery.
just goes to prove, nothing rare about VWs, even early notches. let's not let another yank steal it off us eh?

pete wood - February 20th, 2008 at 05:31 PM
sorry, but I think most splits are a ripoff, the buggy on the other hand is excellent value. LWb and could easily be registered I reckon.

Placed a bid on that notch.
I have a rusty squareback that I can part out if I am triumphant. That's the easy part.
Now to tell the wife as it's her ebay account and I only have a single garage with 3 cars & a Harley.....oh crap

Empi old mate! Isn't it a 64 as advertised with the vinyl 2 tone David Jones seats? The 65 had the one colour seats as did the OZ produced 64
1500S.

I would have to interject and side with Empi on this one as I also own a 65 model identical to the one in the pic without as much surface rust and in
unrestored condition.
It belonged to my grandfather so I am trying to complete the collection with the grandmothermobile.

There always seems to be problems with identifying year models of Type 3s at times.
This is the way I still see it:
Up to 1963 model was the one with cloth seats etc. The 64 model produced in OZ from around August 1963 had the vinyl seats as in the pic. The OZ
produced 1500S of the same year had single colour vinyl seats. There MAY have been a few unsold 64 models purchased in 65 but are actually 64 models
as in the pic. Around August 64 saw the 65 model produced in the OZ S trim with the extended tail light lense rather than the flat ones but still the
single carb as the 64 N.
Around August 1965 saw the end of the N and "S" series to be replaced with the 66 year model 1600 range including the new Fastback.
Some people will have found an OZ "S" with the "David Jones" seats but it really isn't an S. The owner of the day was known to have fitted the
twin carbs and the "S" badge on the back!
Sorry if I still think it's a 64 model but remember..... some of us were there when these models were new on the showroom floor in the 60s and were
involved with them!
My imported model was sold as a 1965 model but is actually a mid year (about) manufacture by the engine and body number. It just took that long to
get here to OZ and then get sold to whoever in Melbourne in 1965!
The one on evilbay is a great find if i'ts as described then it's a great pitty to see it go OS. C'mon, some local buy it even if you are in the
doghouse with the missus! Most of us have been there more than once over our VW purchase.

it's still got 3 days to go. you know the price is gonna go mental in the last day.
Notch Nut - February 22nd, 2008 at 03:49 PM
I am bidding and I *Want it*!!
It really would be a shame to see it go overseas.
1500S, you have me really confused now So far as I can tell, mine
is a 65 but it has a really early ID number 10500 on the plate under the bonnet. Would this mean that mine may be a 64 as you described? There would
have been more options for interior choices other than the 2tone black/white as shown surely? One of the biggest problems with these models is that
many are hybrid from interchangeable parts between models and years.

We can still keep this a secret can't we??
No one needs to know.....
Who is reading this anyway???
1500S - February 22nd, 2008 at 04:10 PM
Adam. With the 1964 N you could have the seats in any colour you liked as long as it was the white/black.white ones. Nothing else was available here
for that year. Has the one you have got a black plastic strip under the headlight and wiper switch? They still had some of those being used around
mid 1964............. leftovers from the 63 models and early 64 S models with the push button headlight switch! A few from 1964 actually had the
dipper switch on the firewall as per bugs. Quite awkward to get to on the Type 3. Many wouldn't be too original now unless they are from "a
little old ladies barn" or have been restored to original format.
There was a list on a site somewhere with year by year engine and body numbers but at the moment I can't find it.

No black plastic under the headlight switches. Dipper switch at end of indicator stalk on mine.
I guess mine is a good representation of what the 65 model was supposed to be without all the extra goodies leftover.
I think I have seen that body number list and from memory mine is classed as an August/September build in 64 making it a 65 model.
Lots of leftovers used throughout the early type 3 model run almost making them unique if you wanted to get into all the minute details and part
numbers etc.

Wasting time like me eh! Too bl@@dy hot here today so it's inside with the A/C! My notch all back together after "donating" the ignition switch
to Dan in Qld for the early Squareback. Just have keep these early ones going.
Have to see what the notch on the bay goes for. Good luck with the bidding.

My original 64 1500N has black plastic strip on headlight switch, dipper switch in the footwell. I dismantel ignition switches and clean/dremel the
contacts to make them work for another 40 years.

Maybe I am biased but the early ones always look better before the Govt. messed up their styling cues with those horrible ADR's.

Not sure on that number Adam. Have a look under the rear seat for the chassis number. My about mid year one is 0474050 with engine number 0747182.
I think when I looked it up the engine was a couple of months later manufacture than the body which could have made it look like a 65 model when
completed so I think the body was semi finished and spent a few rainy nights in a paddock in Wolfsberg waiting for an engine and paint! The rear
parcel shelf had surface rust nicely sealed under the original paint!
DH
PS. Found link on The Samba for those interested.
With a chassis number of 315010xxx the one on ebay would look like it was manufactured around late July-early August 1964.

Notch Nut - February 25th, 2008 at 04:57 PM
So far my bidding is in front and remains strong.
As long as it stays that way, the car will definatly remain in Oz in safe hands.
It should scrub fairly well and I hope to keep it in as close to origional condition as possible. Club plates are looking the most likely option with
some excercise to keep her ticking over for another 40 years (or until oil supplies dry up).
- Adam
Incedently, I emailed the seller and the Body ID is 315 010 379 which I am assuming was built 121 bodies before mine (315 010 500) thus making it a 65
model.

Notch Nut - February 26th, 2008 at 01:21 PM
I had to watch a movie or I was going to bid far more than I could afford.
My final bid was 3750 all along. Had to include shipping from Qld to Melb so not much play money to have left over.
Someone pipped me at the post. Oh well....
Hope it stays in Oz......
Damn fine looking origional notch all the same. Someone's gotta be happy.
- Adam.
