Craig Torrens - March 12th, 2008 at 08:30 PM

Well its time to turn my "seudo" vw storage cupboard into the "Kombi Bar"...................This is nicely located in the garage away from any female influence

So here it is before it transforms into the place of worship.

OZ Towdster - March 12th, 2008 at 08:45 PM

Craig Torrens - March 12th, 2008 at 08:56 PM

I removed the front of the dash (about 2mins work !) to allow the timber to sit level.........................I want to keep the face of the dash in place so i can fit a cd player etc

Craig Torrens - March 12th, 2008 at 09:05 PM

so should I leave the front of the bar with the rough edge (external trunk) or dress it smooth ???

HotRodMatt - March 12th, 2008 at 09:40 PM

Follow the curve of the front...

Craig Torrens - March 12th, 2008 at 09:47 PM

yep, will do. I'm thinking at the front I will leave the trunk surface, just for the look, then bring the timber (dressed) back around to follow the curve.

Dasdubber - March 12th, 2008 at 09:54 PM

Although the trunk surface is cool, I think it would look much better as per hotrodmatt's suggestion with the front edge curved to match the front of the kombi. You could flip it so the rough edge is maintained but faces into the cabin, and the front edge curved and dressed.

Just my 2c though :)

hellbugged - March 12th, 2008 at 10:10 PM

christ, you old school racers are going balmy.................Jeff and you would get on like a house on fire messing around with your wood:lol:..............now wheres my bloody kafer bar (the aluminium traction type!)

squizy - March 13th, 2008 at 06:37 AM

Yeah curve it and smooth it. I don't want our delicate little fingers getting splinters. Also need space for the flipdown screen for the playstation. I have a steering wheel and peddles you can have too.

Oh...and the beers are cold.

matberry - March 13th, 2008 at 09:35 AM

If you want it left rough (undressed sounds better), with all that bush around, find some timber with the right natural curve!! Imo, shape it to the bus... better aero.

h - March 13th, 2008 at 12:38 PM

yeah leave the undressed center and shape to the bus with the undressed in the middle section of the bay.. ( like this bracket sybol thingy..
my 2 cents..
gunna be a great asset to ya shed for sure..

Midlife crisis - March 13th, 2008 at 01:59 PM

hey Graig thats a great Idea,
i hate splinters so I go for smooth and shaped,

Hopefully one day we will get down there to try it out.

no mate, leave it square just like that, looks the goods!... pop a few kegs under and set up 2 fonts with taps... you start shaving off the bar corners and there is less room to sit the beer!!......

i got a chopped splitty front for a bar soon, just need the shed build first!..

Dasdubber - March 13th, 2008 at 10:19 PM

At least you won't have go to town on the audio system - just open the roof of the ragtop and crank it! There is a lot of good gear in there :) Oh and the deep cycle battery is designed so it can be run flat and recharged something like 500 times before any damage occurs - designed for audio systems!

Make sure you update the progress pics once you decide what to do with your "wood"

Craig Torrens - March 17th, 2008 at 09:56 PM

Craig Torrens - March 17th, 2008 at 09:59 PM

vwjon - March 18th, 2008 at 07:41 PM

but them either side of a wall, make the people wonder!!??:lol:

split09 - March 18th, 2008 at 08:11 PM

what u should of done is make a template to fit perfect and then copy cut that to the timber with a router that way u know it will fit excactly. Personally i like the rogh look as a tree is never perfect and therefore should be left natural looking as possibe, just a thought!!

The Bigfella - March 18th, 2008 at 08:48 PM

Did you ever find someone to do the boat timber work? I can't find the contact details on the guys down at the Gut - although any of the marinas down there should know them.

silver - March 18th, 2008 at 09:34 PM

Wheres the work bench???????????

That's what I'm doing................ I just used the circular saw to trim off the excess.

and yes I prefer the look of the rough edge, but tooooo late now

squizy - March 19th, 2008 at 02:24 PM

I like the rough edge. I've changed my mind. Is it too late Craigie?

fullnoise - March 19th, 2008 at 03:08 PM

The best use of a kombi IMO. Cool idea!

Perhaps you could use some hippy curtins on the wall that's visable through the cab?

How about turning the front of the hillclimb car your rear-ended at Baturst into a matching BBQ or love seat?

I'm using that for a dog kennel

Wouldn't mind your oval for a fish tank

fullnoise - March 20th, 2008 at 10:15 AM

At the rate water gets into the car when I'm driving on really wet roads it could probably sustain some fish!

I think the seal (fur seal) moved slightly when I fitted the body to the pan. I might have another go at it in a few months.

Beetles should float shouldn't they?
