GOD DAMMIT!!!!!! i need another helicoil!!!
Anthiron - March 21st, 2008 at 10:53 AM

this will be the second time ive needed to get a helecoil for a stripped spark plug hole!! and always at a time when i need to drive my car.

thought to myself, of good friday, the one day off a year im guaranteed to have. Ill do some work on my car.

start with changing the plugs, pull the first plug, go to screw in the replacement, bam stripped, old one must have just been holding on with a few threads.

so now its easter and i cant drive to work untill i get the helcoil done and i cant even ring to book it till tuesday!

You don't need to book the car in to fit a helicoil, in Newcastle I got all the gear I needed from a mob called Bearing Traders, probably one near you or someone who can supply what you need, came with a kit to do the total job and was cheap as compared to getting it done by some one else, was real easy to do.
Good luck

A helicoil is not a good repair 4 a vw sparkplug thread,
Time sert as mentioned above is the best fix

I use "helicoil" genericaly, what is the diference between the different types ?

Bizarre - March 23rd, 2008 at 10:52 AM

If you look here
http://images.google.com.au/images?hl=en&q=helicoil&gbv=2

You will see a helicoil is an actual coil

Whereas if you look here
http://images.google.com.au/images?gbv=2&hl=en&q=timesert&btnG=Se...

you will see the timesert in a threaded insert

No expert but i can see the threaded insert will be stronger.
I have read that a lot of racers put timserts into new heads before use - especially onto aluminium heads

Bizarre - March 23rd, 2008 at 10:53 AM

I had time serts used on my heads and was brilliant.
V Force did it for me.
Motor didnt need to come out

Anthiron - March 23rd, 2008 at 07:01 PM

cost me 100 bucks for a helicoil and all labour last time (i took the cage off for them first)

ill check out these time serts thanks bizarre

andrew you have a U2U

Anthiron - March 27th, 2008 at 11:59 AM

fixed.

didnt have time to shop around for a time sert so i went with the heli coil.

88 bucks this time.

Deffo go for a timesert next time, far superior than Helicoils for spark plug holes.
Helicoils do have their uses though. Saved me a few times

"Stuff a stoat!" 88 AUD is 40 UKP (yup I'm a Pommie)
Over here you could buy a helicoil plug kit for that price. To have a timesert done is around 25UKP for a loose head...54 AUD

Yep, timesert is the one I used, did it myself, extra easy extra quick
