Driving unregistered
Mick058 - March 27th, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Are you allowed to drive an unregistered vehicle for rego purpose?

Say, weigh bridge, blue slip, engineers slip etc?

68AutoBug - March 27th, 2008 at 12:04 PM

Yes,
You are allowed to drive to obtain Your blue slip etc

naturally you are allowed to drive to a garage who does this..

You don't need number plates to do this...

I've also heard that u have to have an appointment with your destination....could be wrong tho

pete wood - March 27th, 2008 at 12:22 PM

carry a letter of intent outlining your journey and the way you are travelling with the date and times on it and sign it. That way if the cops pull you up they can see what you are doing and that it's all ok.

GTMac - March 27th, 2008 at 12:32 PM

Its supposed to be a direct trip there and back, stopping for petrol OK but a quick bite at Maccas may not be seen as a direct route.

Mick058 - March 27th, 2008 at 12:37 PM

Petrol yes, Maccas no, alrighty sounds good.

Anyone know how it works insurance wise? Green slip especially.

blutopless2 - March 27th, 2008 at 12:40 PM

depends on the state... in vic you can organise with rta that you are intending to drive an unregistered vehicle to either a repairer or rwc place... i cant remember exactly how long they last as i did it years ago with my oval.. i wondered how the hell i was gonna get it roadworthied and registered if i had to trailer it everywhere. think the permits can last up to a month (either daily, weekly or month etc). BUT you can only drive them directly from your place of residence to the repairer/rwc place/rta and home again. If cops pull you over at least you have rta approval for driving the car. In vic i think its a $500 fine for unregistered vehicle.

check with the rta in your state.

blutopless2 - March 27th, 2008 at 12:42 PM

not sure how the insurance side works with an unregistered car.

ian.mezz - March 27th, 2008 at 12:50 PM

get your green slip from NRMA
Ring Shannons about insurance 13 46 46

Mick058 - March 27th, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Can people also refresh my memory, done this once before, but.

I need engineers slip, weighbridge ticket and blue slip??? Is this correct?

Mick058 - March 27th, 2008 at 12:54 PM

Ian, i can have green slip without registration? Have cover with shannons at the moment under a 'laid-up' policy

ian.mezz - March 27th, 2008 at 12:54 PM

depends on what you have changed???
no ADRs for a 58 bug
Yes you can get green slip before as you need one for rego

Mick058 - March 27th, 2008 at 01:05 PM

Arh yes, sorry been a while. Had a company car for 3years, forgot the process.

I've changed alot http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=67295

squizy - March 27th, 2008 at 01:18 PM

Ah so the motor is back from Nana Glen eh?

Mick058 - March 27th, 2008 at 01:22 PM

Not quite squizy, the 58 is going for a ride upto Nana Glen. She'll sit up back while the rodeo pulls her all the way. Looking forward to this. Figured best to take it up, get it in and check the lot. Got all the roof lining, windows and electric done just in time. Will post pics soon.

68AutoBug - March 27th, 2008 at 02:19 PM

it really depends on where You are located..

in Scone I have to drive to Muswellbrook to get a blue slip.

then green slip and rego... all in Muswellbrook..

if i got knocked back on the blue slip I would still have to go back to Muswellbrook...

I drove My beetle with the old plates on it..
No plates does draw attention from the police..
especially the Highway Patrol.. in NSW

I've never heard of anyone getting insurance before they drove to get the blue slip...

having the letter with all the details sounds like good advice...

cheers

Lee

You will need to call Shannons and tell them it will be driving, unrego'd, under its own steam. Laid Up policy will not cover it when driving under its own power and/or on-road

It's best to buy the greenslip BEFORE you drive anywhere - although it is technically not valid, it shows your legitimate intention for registration, not just a joyride, to any curious cop

Mick058 - March 27th, 2008 at 04:14 PM

Cheers, green slip advise sounds good. On top of the shannons bit, cheers.

So i need engineers and blueslip???

vw54 - March 27th, 2008 at 04:48 PM

You wont be able to drive it gack from Nana Glen if thats what yr thinking

and amke sure you take the shortest route to the blue slip place etc etc

Mick058 - March 27th, 2008 at 05:29 PM

No way! Got a trailer, im towing!

ian.mezz - March 27th, 2008 at 06:31 PM

thats worse than driving with no plates as they class it as you are trying to deceive, its like putting plates off another car on,as the plate No. could have been re-issued:td:

h - March 27th, 2008 at 07:12 PM

yeah i think up here you need a 3rd party rego cert from an insurance co with the specified date on the cert to match the day of intent to go and get regoed at the mechnics then onto MRD..
from my feeble memory hey..

GTMac - March 27th, 2008 at 09:14 PM

TIP............dont try filling up at the petrol station with no plates on, id pay the attendant first!

if you do, wear a motor bike helmet

karmannghia60 - March 28th, 2008 at 11:28 AM

I thought you needed a permit for the day. You pay them something which covers your insurance. This is the case with VicRoads anyway. $550 fine if you get caught without the permit
Raf

ian.mezz - March 28th, 2008 at 12:37 PM

i have had a customer coming in for a blue slip and they got pulled over and they showed the nice police person ther letter and they was ok to go on ther way.

amazeer - March 28th, 2008 at 05:59 PM

Just drive it to nearest place to inspect it. Get your bluey and pinky. Most certifiers should be able to submit the details online these days. Greenslip over the phone. Registration online. If its registerable there arent any dramas.

what is laid up insurance? Is it possible I can insure my oval even though its not all in one piece?

ian.mezz - March 28th, 2008 at 07:59 PM

you can not do Blue Slips Online.
you need the CTP paper work to take to the RTA so if you get the CTP on the net or fone you have to wait for them to post it out.
As your car has no rego, so no records of you or the car at the RTA

Mick058 - March 28th, 2008 at 08:58 PM

Thanks for the offer Ian, but not ready for blueslip for about a month. Go away for 2weeks.

'Laid-up" insurance means its covered for theft or falling off the trailer or fire etc, but you can't drive it!
