Nice pic Dave

Question: the middle of the 65 hubacap -VW symbol, did u paint it black or sea blue?

pyr0 - May 27th, 2003 at 09:51 AM

looks good love the camera angle

vw54 - May 27th, 2003 at 10:05 AM

I painted it black in the middle of hubcap.

Ive seen them done in red but never the colour of the car. The wheels were pained the colour of the car... two tone

Bloody time consuming... i mask each hubcap and cut the tape from the area... then undercoated and finally sprayed 2 coats of black enamel.

Lucky i did them at work.

Oh yeah thanks to Pete Speedster356 for taking the pics.

Andy - May 27th, 2003 at 10:15 AM

Not that I really know, but I though the hub caps were usually body colour??
Or was that an early Kombi thing?

Phil74Camper - May 27th, 2003 at 10:43 AM

No the Australian factory never went into that detail. All the Australian hubcaps were stamped here, chromed and painted black. The VWs left the Melbourne factory without hubcaps - they were put in plastic inside the car and fitted by the dealers once they were at their yards. This was to preventy damage during transport.

Caring dealers would sometimes paint over the black in red, and I daresay it's possible that some MIGHT have done it in body colour too at a customer's request. but certainly not at the factory.

vw54 - May 27th, 2003 at 10:56 AM

Might have been a Kombi thing... I know ive seen one paint red, maybe it was from a Kombi.

XXX-1.8T - May 27th, 2003 at 03:44 PM

Ive seen them in white and in body colour, tossing up between sea blue or white

black looks too old school for me, but suits ur car well Dave:bounce

baybuscamperkid - May 27th, 2003 at 04:54 PM

there is an easier way to do the coloured letters... spray colour over then carefully wipe top immediately with cloth covered in terps. works brilliantlyand saves masking.

XXX-1.8T - May 27th, 2003 at 04:58 PM

I was thinking of using a paintbrush painting the vw symbol

im sure thats what they did in the old days at the dealerships:sandrine

vw54 - May 27th, 2003 at 05:23 PM

Turps ... how do you get the bit of paint of the middle section of the VW emblem

No they were defiently sprayed at the factory... not brushed...

Brushing is just a tedious... much easier to mask and spray and a better job

Jay_1965vw - May 27th, 2003 at 08:10 PM

I thought only kombis had them painted - beetles were plain chrome. Now who told me that....

jenz58 - May 27th, 2003 at 08:21 PM

My goodness, such a perfectionist;)

Answer, have one of each:sandrine

Painted, smaited, just drive the thing:bounce

Hmmm, am I stirring the pot:jesus

OvalGlen - May 27th, 2003 at 08:34 PM

Stock Vs Modified, i love the Smoothie
but I fear I'm getting old, I prefer the stock.........................
( But I would miss the Acceleration.........maybe a sleeper.)

Grey 57 - May 27th, 2003 at 08:38 PM

Like em both Dave, but the smoothie gets my vote. Lotta nice details on that car.

vw54 - May 27th, 2003 at 09:53 PM

vw54 - May 28th, 2003 at 08:48 AM

So its not a particular type of fish its any bloody thing you can find

jenz58 - May 28th, 2003 at 09:17 PM

Don't ask me, it's just when people talk Jewish food they talk Gefilte Fish a lot cos it's such a Yiddish word I guess

Jewish telegram: "Begin worrying. Details to follow."

Anyway stock or modified, I do tend to lean more toward stock but can appreciate a cool modified when I see one

:):thumb

KruizinKombi - May 28th, 2003 at 10:25 PM

Gimme the resto anyday, but I like both. Stock with accessories is probably the coolest, but I'm leaning retrotech too...

I dunno Dave, which one do you like best?

vw54 - May 29th, 2003 at 08:01 AM

Col

I carnt make up my mind, I drive the Smooothieee every day and luve it. I suspose it the smoothieee, cause i have not driven the Sea Blue all that much.

I should start taking it for a test drive each week, as its on Vintage redgo it makes it abit hard.

Jen

I like that one

jenz58 - May 29th, 2003 at 08:52 AM

:) L'Chayim:beer

Hmmm, finding the older stock engines take a lot of care and parts can be hard to find or replace so can understand how people would modify or upgrade engine and voltage if wanting to drive daily.

Also if body is not in wonderful condition or making something up from several different bodies, then a decision could easily be made to modify and do something different. But if you have a reasonably sound body, a sweet ride and it is old/rarer, then decision for me would be impossible

One way or the other

as long as we keep as many on the road as we can.

jenz58 - May 30th, 2003 at 08:49 PM

I second that:):thumb

Golde60 - June 1st, 2003 at 12:32 PM

MODIFIED

in beetles, i like modified. gives them more personality and reflects on the owner.

kgs stock. cos they look so nice that all you would want to do is cruise slowly. and they cost to much to buy in the first place.
