Server outage - my bad!
vanderaj - April 15th, 2008 at 01:43 PM

My bad.

The server restarted automatically during Saturday night, presumably to coincide with our hoster's network downtime I previous announced. This normally would not be a problem as the server is good to get going without my help - normally.

However, I was in the middle of a change that I was not yet ready to promote into production. Ironically, the change is to add real time monitoring (with paging and escalation!) so that soon, I would be immediately informed of such impending feats of doom.

Due to my fiddling, the web server's configuration files were inconsistent as I hadn't tested them at that stage, and thus Apache failed to start when the server rebooted.

Not good. My bad. I don't normally let such things happen.

The good news is that I *should* be notified of any such outages again in the future, even if they are the result of operator error!

thanks,
Andrew

Andrew as if we'd complain. Considering you do this for nicks, knowing that you're going to be alerted in the future is great. Not having AVD means we just got in with other things. :tu:

I couldn't imagine the withdrawal symptoms and shaking. People would have to go play with their VWs instead of coming to this site! :)

Thanks for sorting out the problems Andrew - hopefully someone who is IT savvy can put their hands up to offer some assistance so it all doesn't fall on your shoulders each time there is a problem! I would help if I knew what I was doing :)

Hi

Thanks for all the great work. I didn't know I was addicted until I couldn't log on for a few day, the family and the VWs got some more attention though.

Andrew, I'm happy to setup a cron job to do a curl test to the forum page from my hosting server to check its working, and if not send an email/sms to you if that helps?

Cheers

Steve
