I have never submitted a poll before and not sure if it has been done correctly. How do you vote on this thing, how have other people voted as some have and some can't or maybe I can't vote because I set the poll, should'nt there be small white dots to click on to cast a vote or maybe I am dreaming and have lost the plot.

Phil74Camper - May 30th, 2003 at 02:03 AM

According to the Oxford Dictionary that came with my Britannica Encyclopedia CD:

Bay Window: noun A window built to project outwards from an outside wall.

Can someone please explain what that has to do with VW Kombis?? T2 Kombis do have curvy screens, but they DON'T project outwards. They follow the curve of the body and, if anything, slope inwards as they rise to the roof. They don't make an alcove like real bay windows in houses do.

Is this another inaccurate, lazy term we've picked up from overseas? I, for one, refuse to use it.

Same with Vanagon - the name used in the US for the T3 Kombi, only available in Microbus form in that market. What are you going to call a T3 panel truck, or window van, or pickup (single or double cab)? These weren't sold in the US and therefore CANNOT be called 'vanagons'.

I have a series 2 Kombi which, incidentally, was sold in Australia as the VW Commercial. The T3 was called the VW Transporter.

fish - May 30th, 2003 at 04:58 AM

c'mon splittys, the bays are starting to get ahead.

fish - May 30th, 2003 at 05:01 AM

Hey phil. is your avatar of a BAY kombi or a CURVY kombi. He He He!!!!:D :D :D

Phil74Camper - May 30th, 2003 at 09:09 AM

Exactly! My avatar is a shot of my '74 Campmobile, which is certainly curvy (I love looking at curves...)

But it DOES NOT have 'bay windows'. The roof goes up - maybe that makes it a cape cod. Who knows.

Andy - May 30th, 2003 at 09:44 AM

I thought the term 'bay window' came out of England?
Phil, I call mine a Volkswagen Microbus Deluxe thanks :o
As much as I agree with the term T1, T2, T3, T4, T5. The problem I often see is many people abbreviate Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 to T1, T2, T3 etc.
Gets very confusing. Typical Germans!!!

sand kombi - May 30th, 2003 at 10:13 AM

GO THE BAYS ,THE VANAGONS ,THE WESTFALIAS , THE TYPE 2'S ,THE T2'S OR THE CURVEY ONES , WHICH EVER ONE YOU WANT BUT GO GO GO !!!!!!
:beer:thumb:beer:thumb:beer

Phil74Camper - May 30th, 2003 at 10:27 AM

Hi Andy, yes it did, I first remember seeing the term 'bay window' in UK VW books and thinking 'what a strange thing to call a Kombi'. The Yanks just call them VW Buses. I call mine a 'Kombi Camper'.

The Poms also call the T3 Kombi the 'wedge'. Thank goodness that hasn't caught on here...yet. I wonder what they call the current T4 model? The bedford maybe??

'ere, wot sort o' dynamo ya got on yer bay window - cor blimey, got any wings for a firteen oh free?'

Andy - May 30th, 2003 at 01:28 PM

hehehe, you crack me up!!!
Not sure about the 'poms', but the 'yanks' call a T4 a Eurovan.

frog - May 30th, 2003 at 04:50 PM

You have a point phil,I am an Aussie and should not take after other countries naming of kombis as I did in this poll,so from now on there is...
1950 to 55 barndoor.
1955 to 67 splitscreen.
1967 to 79 curve screen......sounds good to me.
1980 to 83 aircooled square kombi
1984 to 92 watercooled square kombi...and so on.
This seems universal so everybody know which kombi your talking about,
But hows bout we come up with our own Aussie names for each model and baffle the rest of the world.
