So I now ask firstly "Why do people feel it necessary to arrogantly have front fog/ driving lights that sometimes are equivalent to aircraft landing lights on at the front and sometimes the red super beam fog rear lamp that is ignorantly put on as well?"

Are you one of these people?????? Why do you do it? Do you think it would or would not inconvenience other drivers? Is it just because you can? Is it just an image thing?

Personally in my own opinion it is not a vehicle with any class that has to have driving lights on all the time just for the driver to think it looks cool.

My poor 45W yellowish light generator powered headlights pale into significance, but I seem to get around allright!

the later "white" foglamps [whatever] are too bright to be foglamps

they are mounted low , like foglamps

but they would never work with fog...

as they dazzle the hell out of the oncoming drivers..

this was a problem a few years ago...
then people seemed to have found the OFF switch

but its started again with new vehicles including 4WDs..

they should go out when the headlamps are on...

I have Genuine Bosch YELLOW fog lamps on My beetle
and they reflect ALL the light down low under the fog..
and they are hardly visible to oncoming drivers - day or night

but those New Cars and 4WDs with the ultra bright
so called fog lamps look like there is no adjustment
as they ALL shine all over the place ....

I always wonder when i see a car with a Red rear Fog lamp
turned on at night whether the driver knows how to turn it OFF....

PS: 80/90 & 100 watt headlamp bulbs are illegal too...

And it attracts around a $75 fine in NSW if the cops want to enforce it. Have you also found that if you give them a high beam flash to get them off they hit you with their high beam plus the FIGJAM lights!

Another annoying thing is the arm danglers and gutter grippers which seems to also be forgotten as an infringment which came into play in the 60s.

Just noticed Lee's post on the white fog ligts. This is all the go in Europe and the white lights mounted low in the bumper actually show under the fog and give a good spread. About the only place I have seen real bad fog is on that Princes Hwy down to the Gong. Even here around the Hawkesbury it generally doesn't get that bad and the ones that do use the fog lights still leave the low beam on as well which destroys the effect of the others.

it also seems that many people don't know its illegal to have any part of your body protruding from a car

including an arm etc out the window....

There was a fellow at the VW nationals a few years ago who had a white 68 LHD french beetle with yellow headlamps... [which is standard in france]

He bought the car to drive around Europe and loved the car so he bought it home with him..
He did say that yellow lights never dazzle oncoming drivers
He said it was great idea.. yellow headlamps..

but they were deemed illegal when he went to get it registered...

I have fog lights on my Prado, I have never needed to use them in fog, I do use them to flash on and off quickly to warm other drivers that they have their fog lights on, they dont seem to notice.

I have noticed that the fog lights do give much extra light at close to the front of car, which can be handy. I've often thought of wiring them up to come on with high beam.

In the course of my job (I work for a large motoring organisation) I often find that people have their fog lights on when they turn their lights on, when I inform them they often not aware that they have them on or that it is illegal to to use them unless the weather conditions are adverse.

I think Moronos & Commondoor lights are the worse for glare.

In my mind I would love to walk down the road merrily cut all the wire leading to fog lights, particaly on the rear Hyundias.

People that leave driving lights / high beam / foglights on always get in my bad books.

I drove a beetle with fog lights and a van with a driving light and I knew when to use them. It doesn't take much brain power.

When I get around to it I'll have a van with fog lights and a driving light. But unlike most people, especially 4x4 owners, I know how to use them. And the added limitations of the VW electrical system help to enforce them. Nothing like 2X100w high beam and 1x100w driving light to upset the alternator.

First thing I ever bought on ebay, set of fogs to go in the Forester, reckon they make the Soob look just that much better, mind you the mises drives it 90% of the time so I installed them but didn't wire them up, that makes it impossible for the demons to get her, well for that offence anyway.

I hate this also. I wait until they get close to me and then turn on my high beam and leave it on high until they pass me. I figure if they care so little about my night vision, then I won't care if I damage theirs. Because I leave it close enough to them to make sure I get them but not too early for them to put their full high beam on, it doesn't affect me any more than they already have.

I always make sure though that there are no cars in front of me (coming towards me or the going in the same direction) so I don't blind them as well. Unfortunately it means I can't do this to everyone ignorant enough to drive with them on but at least I get a few. My high beams are super bright as well so they really know they have been hit with them.

all i can say is i wish they would stick them goddam foglights up their jacksyif you need to use them as well as normal low beams i think you should (A) go get your eyes tested (B) dont drive at night so that the people who dont need to be blinded can drive safely,and lastly (C) c`mon law enforcement do something about it

Not that I am demanding answers, I am viewing my opinion, as well as hoping to gauge other peoples opinions. I am glad your lights are not set to inconvenience other drivers, as it seems many are.

i suspect that in most cases the foglights that piss people off are either an aftermarket item that is poorly installed and directed or they are oem equipment that has been installed wrong.
a guy i work with had probs with his foglights on a hsv... found that they pointed upwards too much for his liking... when he got under the front to check them he found that they had been installed arse about... so the lhs was on the right and viceversa.. that explained why they pointed upwards. once corrected they were fine.
so incorrect fitment can happen even from the factory.

Bad visibility was my scape goat on my car. Mind you though, where i fitted them was were the wrc special edition models had fotted anyways. makes it no different from that. And yes, you got to direct them downwards, its the road i had trouble seeing, not the sky. But stupidity is adundant and relative too. Even the present new cars on the market have too bright of a headlight i rekon, like the new honda accords and what not. BLOODY HELL!

But i agree though, there are some tossers out there with nasty unnecessary setups. Was a truck i was following at one stage with this clear lamp at the back that was friggen as bright as a full beam headlight, pissed me off badly.

Bottom line though is they are illegal to use when your headlight on on either low beam or high beam. Your main lights are supposed to have only the parking lights on when the fog lights are on. If people can't see your main headlights on, the driving lights are going to make next to no difference to them being able to see you any better.

All it does is piss off other road users. Sure some are aligned properly and others not but NONE of them should be on in day to day use.

mmm, I got stunned today by a marauding commonbore driver with his driving/fog light on just after dusk. For goodness sake, he was doing 45km/h in a back street, why on earth he need his driving/fog lights on was beyond me. I flashed him as it was making the winscreen in my car (ancient swift) seem even more opaque than usual but he just flashed me back and went on blinding me. Why is it that when people buy certain cars they take the free lobotomy option?

Once my buggy's back on the road (if it ever gets there ), 550watts of superoscars and high beam should sort him out.

It's not good when you are driving your car with only low beam on and stupid wankers flash there high beam on you, do they get a surprise when you actually flash the high beam back at them. This was on my new bmw. Very annoying.

We have the driving lights on the 4wd but have never had to use them while driving.

This topic has had me looking out for the fog/driving light offenders, they seem to be everywhere but the number of these that actualy give me a problem is next to zero, it would seem that those that do cause a problem must be adjusted incorrectly, by accident or intentionly I don't know, just seems to me to be a bit of a fasion thing among some to drive with them on, except for those that are adjusted so that they cause a problem I can't see the big deal.

if the windscreen on your car is old or a bit misty, the extra level of light makes the whole windscreen act like a diffuser and the whole screen turns almost opaque. Not to mention the whole blinding thing. I actually am quite happy for people to use them on wet days or on a very dark night in the country, but on a suburban street when it's not completely dark? Just ridiculous.

I'd be interested to know, just out of interest of course, if one was to run into the offending car because it blinded them, who would be at fault?

A windscreen with that sort of problem would also give a hell of a problem driving into the sun, thats happened to me on the occasion that I failed to keep the inside of the screen clean. On the few occasions that oncomi8ng cars have failed to flick to low beam I find the age old trick of glancing to the left side of the road works well enough, still, illegal is still illegal and the laew should be enforced I spose.
