Police in Alice Springs say they were appalled to find a driver put a seatbelt around a carton of beer - but left a five-year-old child unrestrained.

Officers stopped the unregistered sedan on the Ross Highway south of Alice Springs on the weekend.

They found the child sitting in the back seat without a seatbelt, but the driver had put a belt around a slab of beer.

I have to agree with VWKG. Only in the NT could this happen. I have the story which ran in the NT News today.

Beer strapped in, not boy

TARA RAVENS

14May08

TERRITORY police were shocked when they pulled over a driver who had put a seatbelt around his slab of beer -- but left a five-year-old boy unrestrained.

The child was sitting on the console between the front seats.

The 30-can carton of VB was strapped in between two adult passengers. Superintendent Sean Parnell described the incident as "mindboggling''.

The arresting officer, Constable Wayne Burnett, said he had never seen anything like it.

"This is the first time that beer has taken priority over a child,'' he said.

Const Burnett said the driver "just looked at me blankly'' when he was handed a $750 fine for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and failing to ensure a child was wearing a seatbelt.

The car was stopped south of Alice Springs, during a police traffic blitz on the weekend. Ten drivers were caught for drink-driving during the crackdown.
