Well for the first time my 64 Beetle refused to go.
It was a cold ish morning (6 deg or more)
Car is stored in a shed and covered etc.
Wouldnt start and then battery started to struggle.
Went and had a go this afternoon (22deg) and started first pop like a dream!
Is there a trick to starting older cars in cold weather?
Engine is a 1641 single carb ( not that it makes a difference I am guessing)
I guess I am asking is this just a problem I am having or is it common?
Thanks in advance
6Volt or 12 Volt
dosent matter make sure the battery terminals and starter moter connections are all clean slightly greased and tight before you go too far
how old is yr battery does it have the right level of electrolight
there are a zillion things to check
12 volt
So how clean the battery etc are effects starting in cold weather?
Just weird how it wouldnt go in cold weather but in the middle of the day it started brilliantly.
I will check the terminals etc and see if it helps in the cold.
Batteries don't like the cold
so its important for Your engine to start
ASAP..
Do You have an automatic choke on Your carburetor??
You may need to adjust it...
an electronic ignition will also help the engine start
[Mine starts first go every go]
Make sure the battery connections are clean and tight
all the current from the battery has to go thru them..
Do You have a hot start relay in Your ignition system??
When using a relay in the starting system, instead of the current going from the battery up to the key ignition switch then back [past the battery] to
the starter Motor
The power goes from the Battery to the relay to the starter motor..
I have My relay sitting above the starter motor..
LEE
somethings up then
like lee said check ur lecy choke make sure its working
vws will start in total snow if the batteries good enough
My Fasty loves cold weather.........woooooooooooooosh.

Another trick to try is turning on the headlights for a few minutes, then off again and wait a minute before starting....this will excite the battery and often makes starting easier.
you will probally find its the earth thats loose or corroded add some vasso to the terminals and where they attach to the body work
