The squareback and notchback went on sale in late 1962. The Fastback went on sale in late 1965. The notch was never offered in North America which is why they go for big$$$ there. I'm not sure if they went on sale in Oz at the same time but my Fasty is a 66 and the square is a 63 so it would have been close.
Cheers

Thank's guy's
A lady want's to sell me one but I dont know much about them it's a 1965 1500 fawn with red interior all original 60 000 mls and she said somthing about TS and said it was a sedan but she want's $7.000 is that to much to pay for a good one.
The only reason im asking i just wanted a car that i didn't have to spend money on but looked good do you think it 's worth driving up to have i look or is she asking to much ?I don't know how many of them there are about, are they rare in that condition?

It's hard to put a price on them. I paid 2kfor my fastback and have spent about another 4k on it. i paid more than twice that for the square but i don't intend to spend anything on it. I'm happy with what i spent on both of them so it's purely a personal thing. if it feels good then do it. If it feels like it's too much then it probably is.

Type 3s were first made in Rhd in 1963
and debut at the 63 melb car show .
Photo documents can be seen on the Samba.com
First production of the type3 was late 1961:kiss

It's not too much to pay if it is in excellent condition. For that money though, it would want to be pristine. (In my opinion) :)

Yes it took a while for the Type 3 to arrive in Australia. It first appeared at the Frankfurt Auto Show in late 1961 and went on sale in Europe shortly after.

For Australia, Germany had to provide tooling for the stamping of Type 3 body panels. Remember that VWs sold in Australia in the early 1960s were manufactured in Melbourne. It took VW Germany over a year to supply the jigs, tooling and equipment needed to make the Type 3 here. Eventually, the notch and the squareback went on sale in Australia in March 1963, with single-carb 1500 engines.

The 1500 Twin S appeared in 1965, but was uneconomic to make in Melbourne. It was killed off, and instead VW Australia fully imported the 1600 TS Fastback from Germany in 1966, and sold it alongside the locally made 1500 sedan and squarebacks.

After 1968, VW Australia stopped full manufacture and went to back to assembling CKD kits of Beetles, Kombis and Type 3s.
