Server Downtime: Software Sidegrade
vanderaj - June 3rd, 2008 at 04:13 AM

Hi there,

The forum software we are using (UltimaBB) has been discontinued. The software UltimaBB is based upon is called XMB. I am working on XMB 2.0, but that is like 2+ years away from completion as it is a total re-write.

Therefore, I will be upgrading the forum to phpBB 3.0.1 this coming weekend. If you want to get familiar with the system, you can do so here:

Test site

http://stage.aussieveedubbers.com/

Any posts or users created in the staging are subject to change and in fact, I will be doing test migrations of this database there throughout this week. Do not post anything there you care about as I will not be migrating that database to production.

Some things will change:

BBCode

phpBB has a slightly different BBCode dialect. Not all of the tags we have here work exactly the same as they do on phpBB. Most do. Please forgive any issues with the translation.

PM attachments

phpBB 3.0.x does not support PM attachments. All of these will be lost. If you need them, please save them to your computer before the weekend.

Moderators

I need to hand create the moderators in the new software as they are special types of user groups. I will be looking at our current moderators to see who has been active and helping the community. This does not mean that you needed to have modified topics, just that you've been helpful and active here.

!! Any moderator who has not logged on since May, or not participated since May will be demoted. Once we have a full idea of how many positions will be opened up due to this change, we will ask for more volunteers !!

Bad Attitude

phpBB 3.0 does not support password protected forums. It does support user groups with unlimited numbers of members. I will add everyone who has posted to Bad Attitude since the beginning of the year to that group, but if you read but do not post there, this is the week to do so!

Advertisers

If you're an advertiser with us, this will not directly impact you - your ads will still come through and be displayed in the right section. However the statistics for the ads might get reset in the move. At the moment, we don't have an easy way for you to see those statistics, but I will work on it once the move is complete.

thanks,
Andrew

So I take it from this, you should (fingers crossed) be able to migrate over our current user profiles?
Sorry if its a numpty question, but I am not that IT smart and you do a great job for all of us Andrew.

I am working on a convertor now.

Most things will come across, I hope.

thanks,
Andrew

could be good. Will the codes work in all forums? Currently they dont work in Circuit racing. And maybe I will get to see all the piccies people post without having to have 3 different user id's!

As you can tell, I haven't completed the side-grade. There are a lot of tables to convert and we may need some decent testing periods to make sure it's a smooth transition. The good news is that there was no downtime taken as a result.

Most codes will work just fine. I'll look at the forum you mentioned - it's prob. got BBcode disabled for some reason.

thanks,
Andrew

There were some forums with a blank allow imgs, allow smilies, and allow bbcode. I've enabled all forums for all three. Please try now?

thanks,
Andrew

Okay, the staging site is now active:

http://stage.aussieveedubbers.com

I'll be running the convertor against that site many times, so please don't post anything there you care about. However, please do create yourself a user and let me know if there's anything that I could change to make it feel more like "home".

thanks,
Andrew
