AUSTRALIA'S FASTEST KOMBI - WIN $10 000 AND A KOMBI!!
heavy - July 10th, 2008 at 12:40 PM

HI Guys

Hoping you can help us, could you please put the word out to your members/users about an exciting new online TV show Heavy is producing to find “Australia’s fastest Kombi”.

We’re looking for one team to represent their state and build a Kombi van from scratch, source parts and get it to Sydney mid September to take the time trial at Sydney Dragway. The fastest van and winning team will receive $10,000 in cash and get to keep the van. So if you’re keen to enter you club, think “Top Gear meets “American Chopper” where State vs state, man vs machine, kombi vs the clock !!

The competition starts at the end of July, in which teams have 6 weeks to tinker with the vans and participate in the Sydney time trial on week Seven. Each team will be allocated video camera’s, phones, internet cards and laptops to film the restoration, and the journey spent in coming to Sydney right up to the race day.

Some competition rules are;

· Heavy will provide each team a $10,000 budget to purchase a van, source parts and travel

· All vans must not be newer than 1975 model, have 2.0L engines and teams can only use traditional and standard parts.

· Each team must have a minimum of 5 team members in which at least one must be female

· Each team must provide a secure workshop/garage to work and store the van throughout the competition

· Teams must provide 30 minutes of footage each week to Heavy to produce a weekly show on http://www.Heavy.com.  Footage will include teams sourcing the vans and parts, working on the vans, testing it, dealing with issues etc.. using a team member that has some filming and camera experience is a plus.

· The vans must be presented dent free and painted for the time trial at Sydney Dragway. Teams must display their team names and logo on the side of the van

· Each team must appoint a team captain who is responsible for that team adhering to all the competition rules.

Please contact Nathan Ruff on Nathan.ruff@heavy.com or 0410 608 329 with any interested participants. Heavy.com will be meeting and casting next week, so there is not time to lose!

Call me any questions

Nathan

I think I'll leave this thread, and clean up all the others that have been created.

Nathan - Whilst I think we all appreciate the initiative, you hit the VW scene at maybe the wrong time. We've got a big show at Valla Park coming up next month, and most people are working on their own rides, or workshops are getting other peoples cars ready. That's my generalisation - but perhaps one reason why the teams haven't quite come together at this stage.

Plus....it's winter....and bloody cold at night - when most people would be taking part in this (after their day jobs).

Anyhow - my 20c. Fully support the idea - just think the timing is a bit off.

heavy - July 10th, 2008 at 01:45 PM

The filming/competition starts on the day of the festival so hopefully it wont clash at all.

Craig Torrens - July 10th, 2008 at 01:56 PM

please post all the rules, or at least a link to them.

What and when is this festival?

Looks like a great opportunity, but I have to agree with Squizzy, that timing with such short notice, seems to be a bit difficult to accomplish, albeit extremely interesting.

Read the rules carefully :tu:

"At all times the Kombi vans remain the property of Heavy (with the exception of the winning Kombi after the time trial) and in the event of an occurrence that renders a Kombi van of no use to Heavy, at the sole discretion of Heavy, the relevant team participants will be equally liable to reimburse Heavy the $10,000 or part thereof."

"Teams must always adhere to Heavy’s directions in relation to filming, ‘plot set-ups’ and other."

interesting....hard to accomplish though given the tight timing

Heavy sounds like a bunch of wankers ...... I don’t know what others are thinking but if you read those rules as they are written, ie by a Corporate Entity who has no interest in anything apart from making money off suckers you will clearly see they are setting up the VW community for a big fall.

What sort of an idiot hands a mechanic a video camera and notebook and then says you will be panelised if your footage isn’t up to scratch ... WTF ?? and that is just scratching the surface.

Then they want you to bust your but, you have a $10k budget but you can use anything you already have without cost and give it to them for free at the end … man that is crazy …

They can change the rules throughout and kick you out without justification …

This is close on being the biggest scam I have seen in VW world since some Nigerian asked me to buy his split oval ragtop for $1000 ….

I want to know what contract Heavy is going to sign with participants so that the businesses that participate don’t get slagged, bad publicity, or cut just cause heavy don’t like something … and that if Heavy isn’t up to scratch the teams can fine them and get paid hourly rate for their time to date….

You can have 5 team members, one female and only 4 can work on the bus …..

I can see how this is going to pan out, Heavy changing rules at will and people getting pissed ……

MickH - July 11th, 2008 at 10:20 PM

The funniest thing is this..."in the event of an occurrence that renders a Kombi van of no use to Heavy, at the sole discretion of Heavy, the relevant team participants will be equally liable to reimburse Heavy the $10,000 or part thereof."

Pigs arse...what kind of "rule" is that....."Oh sorry guys (and gal) that Kombi is of no use to us,you owe us $10000"???????

I wouldn't normally slag off but thats a phucked idea.....seriously.....
:td:

Dasdubber - July 11th, 2008 at 10:23 PM

Where do I sign up??

MickH - July 11th, 2008 at 10:30 PM

Send me some cash and I'll tell you all about it!! You would be good at this Alan...but you would loose a lot of money with copyright infringements with the amount of pictures you normally post of your build ups!!!

matberry - July 14th, 2008 at 10:18 PM

So whats happening with this?
Anyone know or heard anything?

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - July 15th, 2008 at 06:18 AM

sounds great but some of the rules and regulations just don't sit right with me.
