Hmm the ones I've got on there were made 23rd week of 2003.
Even worse is the tyres I got with my jelly beans, 3rd week of 2000.
I reckon that story is just over exagerated like most of A Current Affairs stories though.

I think you will find it's not exagerated....When I was doing roadworthy certificates a lot of cars failed as the tyres were too old....more than 10 years and they are no good.Insurance companies loved it...less payouts...old tyres,car not roadworthy...

Were the tyres failed simply because they were 10 years old? Or were they hard and stiff and looked old?

when i got my 69 notch, it was still running its origional cross plys, the treads were all exactly the same with the same amount of wear. the side walls were very perished, and the cracks between the treads were almost as deep as the treads themselves!
i reccon those tyres must have been about 40 years old!! the notch is running on radials now!

my ovals tyres have the dates on them the same as the year I purchased them 05 on front and 07 on the rear all good I'm safe.

very early tyers were rubber new stuff are made from everything but rubber and crack

Good find Steve, I had a tyre fail (tread began parting company) on my HQ Holden near Byron Bay while cruising to Qld in 2001. It was pretty scary... They were VERY old and I knew it. I bought new tyres straight away at Nerang, but now THEY are 7 years old... but done only maybe 5000km. Also had a tyre let go on a low-kay 'grandma' Ford laser. Done 50,000km in 8 years and the tyres were like dried mud...

the four tyres that came on My wide chromed wheels that had plenty of tread but they cracked around the side walls..

I have 4 new tyres on now...

many years ago, [in the 70s] someone gave Me a vw wheel with a good michelin tyre on it
I put it on My superbug [on the front] [???]
and it blew out while doing 100kmhs on the highway..
it was very old and self destructed while throwing the beetle off the highway...

so, any cracks and its goodbye old tyres...

made in New Zealand firestones 286 and 276 ????
maybe me tyres are really old
on my new cars its 2206 and 2204 easy ones

I had to buy a replacement tyre in February for our Mazda 6 (sorry folks..wifes idea) and it's a 2004 model.I wanted the factory spec tyres which had to be ordered as they were not a common type. A week later the tyre arrives and I checked the date.The tyre was 5 years old!! They got upset when I refused it and they had to get another. It ALWAYS pays to check the date.My last TOYO buggy tyres were 10 years old this year and even though they had 90% tread on them they were "out of date" and I replaced them....
Better safe than sorry.

Tyre failure is a BIG problem for trailers and caravans
